Won't save print properties

If I try to change the print properties in Word 2003 they go back to the
default. Ex: if I change to color and save, when I go back to properties it
is back to black and white. All other programs print fine to include the
rest of the Office 2003 Pro suite. I ran all the latest updates and tried
reinstalling.

Am I missing a setting somewhere?

Have you tried changing the printer default settings (in Control Panel)?

That does work. However, if the user wants to print duplex one time, or
color one time, she has to go into the default settings of the printer and
change it each time. She can't do it from print inside Word. She can in
Excel or any other program.

To change the settings temporarily, for the current print job: Press Ctrl+P
(or click Print on the File menu). Word displays the Print dialog box. Click
the Properties button next to the printer name, and locate the relevant
setting. When you are done, click OK until you are back at the Print dialog
box. Click OK to start printing.
