won't save files in excel

Everytime I try to save my file in Excel (2003) my laptop freezes -- get a no
response and it shuts the program down --- this is incredibly frustrating ---
I can open a new file and enter data etc. it's only when I try to save it ---
then all data is lost (I've been able to get the recovered doc and print out
- but can't save it)
Any ideas??

Thanks so much-- that fixed the problem immediately!
I should have posted much sooner and not wasted the three hours trying to
figure it out myself!

Hi Garfield,
I have the same problem with Excell and Word. I done everything, described
in kb918165 but the problems are still persist. I'm an SAP Project manager
with 3 current projects and just want to have back my notebook with Windows
XP Pro SP2 and Office 2003 Developer Edition SP2 and IE 7 beta 2 March
preview working. In addition I have 3 different HP printers installed and 1
Ricoh Digital 2018D. Is there any other resolve way or I have to completely
reinstall my notebook? This will cost me my Easter holiday blocked at home.
Thanks beforehand.

The http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165 registry modification
works for most people, but a few users have reported that it does
not fix the problem for them. Two other workarounds are to either:
1. Rename the c:\windows\system32\VERCLSID.EXE file to
something like VERCLSID.OLD. This effectively disables the
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/908531 (MS06-015) update, but
does not uninstall the update. Renaming the VERCLSID.EXE file
will leave your system unprotected against the issue described at
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-015.mspx .
2. Uninstall the http://support.microsoft.com/kb/908531
(MS06-015) update from Start | Control Panel | Add or Remove
Programs. If automatic updates are enabled on your computer,
then the update may be reinstalled automatically. Uninstalling
the MS06-015 update will leave your system unprotected against
the issue described at
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-015.mspx .

Thanks Garfield,
That corrects all other problems exept with Excell. I still can't work with
my saved XLS documents - just can open them and Exell freezed, canceling the
non-responding program returns tre record in Event viewer Apllication -
"Hanging application EXCEL.EXE, version 11.0.8012.0, hang module hungapp,
version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000". With new created XLS files I have
no problems at the moment.
