Won't let me create a partition.

I have a new notebook, with 3 partitions:- 2 manufacturers recovery
partitions and the C: drive which is 100GB. I used shrink to bring C: down
to 40GB, and it worked OK. Now it won't let me create a partition in the
free space. I get through all the steps OK except for the actual creation,
when I get a message that there is not enough disk space to perform the
operation. How come? It knew the size of the free space, and I selected it
all. I tried again, selecting only 40GB of the 60GB and got the same message.

How can I regain this space without extending C: again?

Regards

1) did you reboot? I believe that is sometimes necessary for the OS to
fully recognize the new configuration.

2) try the Gparted Live CD.

Doug, this is the second report like this I've seen. I work with the storage
team and will pass this on to them. We might need to get some more
information from you if that's ok.

Doug, will you contact me via email? I would like you to generate a log file
for us and it's easiest to do this via email. Please use my address minus
"online."

(Other readers: please do not contact me via email unless I ask you to. )

How many partitions do you have on the disk? If you have 4, you can't create
a 5th.

Jill/Doug,

did you guys solve this riddle? I have the exact same problem - plenty
of unallocated space, but can't create a partition on my new Inspiron
6400 (not enough space...).
Reinstalled Vista with 30GB C partition, still no luck. Extended C: to
137GB, and now can't shrink it back. Ughh.
If you have ideas, pls let me know.

thanks - Simon

You won't be able to create a new partition until you delete one. There is
unfortunately no way around this. I'm glad you were able to get your 30 GB
added back to your existing partition though.
