Won't come out of standby?

Posted this problem some time ago in another group but it was never
resolved, trying again here.
PC appears to be coming out of Standby, there's HDD activity and the green
On LED is lit but nothing appears on the screen.
Normal Startup, Shutdown, Restart & Hibernate all working OK.
Things I have tried so far include:
Different monitor.
Both XP and Samsung driver for SyncMaster 940BF 19" TFT.
Both the original and latest nVidia Forceware drivers for graphics card, a
Club 3D
GeForce 6600.
Both the original and most recent chipset drivers for m/b which is a
Gigabyte GA-K8NSC-939.
Flashed the BIOS.
Formatted and re-installed XP Pro/SP2 twice and that appears to fix it but
the fault seems to creep back in, it doesn't appear suddenly.
Been through all the power options in Windows and in BIOS.
No problems showing in Device Manager and Event Viewer shows nothing
unusual.
Am I looking at maybe a failing m/b or graphics card?
Any suggestions or advice appreciated.

I'm having the exact same problem, starting about 3 weeks ago. Starts to
come out of standby, paints the screen background but instead of putting up
the list of valid users and allowing them to log on, it turns the cursor to
an hourglass and hangs. Nothing short of holding in the power on/off button
will fix it. Otherwise, everything is working fine.

I found my monitor was at fault, Pc was booting but screen remained off with
monitor standby light on.
Apparently the graphics card gets blamed allot and it is the other end of
the cable, monitor circuitry. I picked this up when browsing a monitor
repair site.
I have new monitor now.

I started having the same problem today. I also have the GeForce 6600. The mouse and/or keyboard will get the fans running, but the monitor doesn't come to life. I don't believe that the keyboard is functional either...I must hold the main "button" for 5 seconds to turn the machine off. All other fuctions (hybernate, shutdown and restart) work fine. Did you ever solve your problem Kenny?

Do you also have an Nvidia m/b chipset, mine is Nforce3 250Gb?
I re-installed ALL drivers, graphics card, chipset, even sound card, printer
etc. using the latest available.
Made sure I installed chipset drivers before graphics card. Standby is now
working as it should.
Not completely sure of the cause but I suspect it was some sort of conflict
between the chipset and graphics card drivers.
