won't ask for logon name and password

hello,
I've just networked 2 home computers via a dsl router. pc1 runs win2000,
pc2 runs winXP. Accessing win2000 via My Network Places asks for a logon
name and password. Accessing winXP computer simply opens up the shared
folder. How do I configure winXP to require a logon name and password before
sharing files?

thank you in advance,
Daniel

In Windows Explorer go to Tools, Folder Options, View and scroll down to Use simple file sharing. Uncheck it.

Hi Doug,
Thank you for your response. I unchecked it and it still does not as for a
logon and password. To agrevate the problem, I was playing around with the
win2000 drive permissions and now the win2000 folder no longer asks for a
logon and password. Would you know how to enable this feature in win2000?

Daniel,

If you have mathing usernames/passwords on both machines, you won't be challenged for authentication, particularly if you give the Everyone group permissions to the folders in question. By Default, the Shared Documents folder, and its sub-folders have Everyone permissions set. When adjusting permissions, its better to uncheck Allow when changing Group level permissions. Using Deny for Users, for example, would also lock out Administrator level users, as they're part of the Users group,as well.
