Woindows XP PC Won't Start (Possibly Caused by Norton System Works 2003)

J

J.A.S.

I know I had previoulsy posted this, but I still can't get
the answer I need and maybe some one has it:

A couple of week ago I installed and ran Norton System
Works 2003, and then I got a couple of problems.

I attempted to use System Restore and System Recovery but
both failed to work because of the "security" hive was
either missing or corrupt.

I tried to fix them, but I must have done something wrong
because my PC won't even start anymore and now I get the
message that the "System" hive is missing or corrupt.

I followed the steps mentioned in article Q307545 to fix
the latter problem, but when I try to type this whole line
(they're not two lines):

copy c:\windows\system32\config\system
c:\windows\tmp\system.bak

I get the message that "the specified registry could not
be found or it is missing." All the others work, but not
that one.

I tried to repair it by following another article in
another website by typing:

"copy c:\windows\repair\system"

But it doesn't work either.

What do I do?

I have an HP and it doesn't have a recovery or Windows XP
cd. HP mentions that my hard drive has a recovery
partition because it is "better than holding disks." But
my computer is out of warranty, and I COULD get help from
them, but they would charge me and only accept credit
cards, and I don't have one.

Please help me step by step because I am not computer
savvy and I don't know all those computer terms. Sorry to
bother you all.

Hi,
I had a problem like it once and the only way to
solve it was to take it to the local computer shop and
get it repaired. Doesn't cost too much..

While booting up press F8 and hold until screen comes up, then select ( Last good known configuration ) and enter. If this does not fix your machines problem then call HP phone #1-800-227-8164 give them your model number and the windows key code number that should be on the case of your computer and tell them to send you a restore cd of your machine as is was new. This should only cost about $15.00 to $20.00 . If you have any other questions please post and we will try to help.

That won't work because the machine successfully logged on. This makes
XP think the configuration is fine and it makes that the Last Known Good
Configuration.
