Wndows XP SP3 Install

My install went as smooth as silk.

Easiest Microsoft install of a major piece of software I've ever made.

The download was only 69 MB since I visit the MS Windows Upgrade site every
day and keep right up to date.

My computer, a Dell XPS laptop, is pretty loaded with programs.

All run perfectly to date -- even some of the oddball third party stuff.

I didn't turn off Norton Internet Security 2008 during the install. It's
also right up to date.

Box runs even smoother, faster and crisper now...

Excellent job by Microsoft...

Kudos.

My Windows Live Mail install also went off smoothly without a hitch.

Same here. I got the 69mb sp3 from Windows Update ( not automatic )
yesterday ( had to d/l a Validation Tool there first - KB 892130, then
went back in and discovered that the SP3 was then offered ) . Smooth d/l
and installation. Was kept informed of all stages of the installation,
followed by the 'installation successful' message. Rebooted as required,
the only minor event was that Windows Live Messenger went thru' the set up
procedure again. A few seconds later and all is fine. All progs running
ok, including ,as you say , some of the 'oddball' stuff I have too. No
glitches to report. Dell 2350 Dimension ( now 5 years old and chugging
along nicely).

Bingo!

I also appreciated being kept informed of all stages of the installation.

Why an earth check winupdate daily, simply setting winupdate to download
critical updates will suffice

Rubbish!

I don't want ANY "Automatic" Updates...

I check them out first.

And I want to be right up to date with all applicable Windows updates...

So I do the updating manually, daily.

I have to add that this can be a spectacularly bad plan.

As a specific example, a court reporter I know came back from vacation and
plugged in her laptop for the first time at a large hearing, in a networked
environment. Windows Update immediately and silently took over in the
background and promptly broke her network connections, preventing output
from her system, and that's really not desirable.

There was nothing to be done about it till the break, at which point WU was
disabled and the machine rebooted to force WU to actually let go of the
network connection.

We now always make sure that these systems have Windows Update disabled when
they are used in this kind of environment. Automatic system scans by
antivirus apps are also disabled for the same reason.

So I have to say, there are a number of circumstances where Windows Update
should absolutely not be allowed to run automatically.

BINGO!

AND my SP3 install went smooth as silk BECAUSE I had kept the system up to
date manually with daily checks at MS Win Update plus defrag and compression
with Perfect Disk, frequent register cleaning with NTREGOPT and backup with
TrueImage.

Piece of cake...

You know, you can set it to check, and notify you, then all you have to
do is hit custom, and you can then pick the updates. I've skipped the
update to Remote desktop for about a year. You can uncheck it and save
the settings and you never get notified again.

This is automatic, yet it pauses for you to approve them.

Yes, I'm well aware of that.

I want more control and no interruptions with queries.
