.wmv files

Tried to open a .wmv file which I thought was video, but
Irfanview and Winamp just gave me a sound file.
Was I wrong or do I need something else to play it?
If so, what?

WMV = Windows Media Video
Try opening it in Windows Media Play as it

there is a huge probabilty that this file might just be an
audio file with incorrect extn. normally WMP 6.4 picks up
and plays .wmv without problems. u may try installing WMP 9
though Sanjay
Done it and I was right, there are pictures, which on my
Pentium 300 with 128 Ram just coughs and splutters slowly
along. Now I remember why I uninstalled WMP 9 (

Having installed WMP9 you may well find you have the necessay .wmv
codecs.
Have another go at opening the file in MP6.

Sounds like you don't have the correct video codec to display it, and hence why you're only getting audio...

Tried v6.4, but it don't like it.
I may be forced to install v9. Ho hum.

This may be unrelated to your problem but I'll put it out there anyway. I
found I couldn't get all files to play with WMP 6.4, so I installed v7.0
codecs and can play most all WMV files now. Here's where I got the info
(and a 7.0 codec download link):
