Is there a free image grabber for video files?

Is there a freeware image grabber that will do stills from .wmv, .avi, etc.?
I've had a play with irfanview and the screen capture doesn't seem to work
with video formats even when playing within another instance of irfanview.
Preferably, I'd like to take the still directly from the file, rather than
through a screen capture but I'm open to any suggestions.

with irfan you should save all frames then pick yours.
virtualdub lets you copy to clipboard the current frame with ^1.
just tested, pasting from clipboard into irfan.

Can you elaborate on 'save all frames then pick yours', please. I don't see
an option in IrfanView to do this.

Thanks.

Good question. From what I can tell, media players like WMP and Real don't
support still image capture. That seems odd to me. You'd think that would
be standard in any media player.

Anyway, I can verify that VirtualDub works very well for this - at least
with AVI files. As was suggested, I would scroll through the file, hit
Ctrl-1 to copy to clipboard, then switch to Irfanview and paste.

options | extract all frames.

but i checked right now with an avi from the canon a70, which irfan sees via
an mcjpeg30 codec, and the bmp's are all black. i remember having extracted
all frames from other movies, though, so you might want to test. vdub does
it easily, and it's free. with it i rebuilt lots of movies from the camera.

anyway consider that extracting *all* frames in bmp format can total many
gb's...

ciao, j.

a c++ programmer told me that the graphic device is utterly different,
whatever that means. anyway you can test that easily. when you'r looking at
a movie with wmp, not full screen, move the wmp window. you'll see the movie
area moving a few instants later.

Thanks for that, got it sorted now. It's a pity that Irfanview won't allow
you to capture a single paused frame...or at least tell you the frame number
it has paused on so you could pick that frame to slice out. Anyway, mission
accomplished and thanks again.

You can do this with Video2photo at www.pixelchain.com.
If you want it without the small text at bottom just
regester it for FREE and it works fine.
The only file type Ihave had trouble with is the
windows .asf.

If you can pause the video, MWSnap is the best window/selected area
image I have seen. I have been using it on XP for about 3 months, and
I have since removed my commercial program, Capture Professional.

It's free, but you can donate if you want, ala Spybot S&D.

BSPlayer is great. Just press P to save a screenshot. (Key can be
changed.)

There is a catch, from the homesite,

"If your application is not registered, a label will be superimposed
over all exported frames. To get ride of that text you need to get an
activation code from the author. To get the activation code you need
only to e-mail the author (using this e-mail address:) telling him a few
words about the scope of using the software and your experience with
Video2Photo (bad or good ;-)."

Then he emails you and writes that to get the code straight away you
need to donate money otherwise you wait a while.

There's a work around. In VertualDub you can chose the number of frames
you want by loading your film then go into VIDEO/FRAME RATE/ then down to
FRAME RATE CONVERSION. Highlight the option CONVERT TO fps. In the box
put a number to represent the frames per second. For example I have an 18
minute, 180MB MPG and has 29 frames per second fps. If you enter 0.25 in
the box, then go to FILE/Save as AVI, it will save it to an AVI file of
65MB as long as you turn on the NO AUDIO in the AUDIO menu. You can then
load the file you just created and in the FILE menu click on SAVE IMAGE
SEQUENCE, you'll get 258 tga files, about 250kb big, which can then be
converted to jpg.

I a few days ago sent the required e-mail and within
24 hours I got the activation code.

NOTE he puts it at the end of the email in hopes that
if you read the other parts you'll decide to donate.

I sent mine 5 days ago and still no code. Nothing worse than inconsistency.
