Whenever I open an mpeg or a wmv file it closes out
asking if I want to send an error report to Microsoft and
the following entry is in the event log:

Faulting application wmplayer.exe, version 9.0.0.2980,
faulting module wmvcore.dll, version 9.0.0.2980, fault
address 0x000a0086.

I have not installed any new hardware or software
lately. Can anyone shed any light on this?
 
The problem is with WMP9. It can't be removed so you can go back to 7.0. Try using another media player like a DVD player and forget about 9.0
