WLM Issue

G

Gordon Biggar

I have posted this issue on the Windows Live Mail site, which was helpful in
advising me how to work around the problem (explained below). I am posting
it here also, because it appears to be a Vista-related problem, and possibly
there are users on this forum who have experienced similar problems.

In the 64-bit version of Vista Home Premium that I have on my desktop, I am
repeatedly unable to start up WLM. The "fix" recommended by the WLM forum
is to press Control + Alt + Esc, and then to end the wlmail *32 processes
that are running. No one, however, has any suggestions about fixing the
problem.

Is this issue unique to my desktop, do you think, or have other Vista 64-bit
users had the same problem? (I have Vista 32-bit Home Premium on my laptop,
and I have never experienced this problem there.)

Thanks in advice for any thoughts that one might have.

Hi, Gordon.

If you've been following along in posts here, you should have seen reports
that it SEEMS to be triggered by having illegal characters in URL in our
lists of blocked or safe senders. Well, no, those posts were not here in
vista.general but in microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop. No, it is
not unique to your computer - or to mine.

Here's a quote by Ildhund, quoting Peter R on 5/8/2009 in the thread,
"Getting tired of closing Live Mail via task manager":

<quote>
The WLMail team have recently identified a shutdown bug in WLMail:
If your Blocked or Safe Senders list contains an address with an
illegal character (such as ~ or |), WLMail will fail to shutdown
correctly.
So check your Blocked and Safe Senders lists (easier through the
WLHotmail web UI) for email addresses with with illegal characters,
and remove them from the list, or clear the lists completely to be
sure.
The list of *legal* non-alphanumerical characters is:
_
'
-
+
=
&

There are also restrictions on the domain portion of email
addresses - it can't start or end with a dot for example. Domains
longer than 256 characters, and addresses longer than 512 characters
are considered illegal.
