Wizard Keeps Finding New Hardware

B

Bruce

Hi,

I've been using an HP1200 LaserJet on my NT machine for about a year. I
now want to move it to my XPPro machine.

The most recent OS listed on the printer install CD is Win2000. XP is not
listed, but I decided to try it anyway.

The HP manual calls for installing the drivers first from the provided
autorun CD, and then connecting the printer to the pc. I did this, but
everytime I reboot the machine, it always says new hardware found, and
wants to know if I want to install a driver.

The printer prints fine, but how do I stop this "New Hardware Found" from
happenning on each reboot?

Sincerely,
Bruce

First of all, there is an XP driver available at
http://tinyurl.com/ysfbh On the other hand, if things are working OK
with the Win2k driver, you might decide to leave well enough alone.

As for the "New Hardware Found" problem, see

Lem,

Thanks much. Looks like this is a known issue for some printer installs
from manufacturer CDs that don't use PnP installs. I wonder if connecting
the printer to the machine first and letting the OS go through PnP would
have worked. I may uninstall the current driver and try this, and when
prompted, point to the HP provided XP driver (downloaded locally) that you
gave me in the tinyurl link. I did try the HP LaserJet Series Printers
resolution http://tinyurl.com/26x8o given in the Microsoft KB article
298370, but no luck.

By the way, I've seen tinyurl used all the time, but I never needed to
follow a link created by it, so I didn't know what it did. When I followed
the one you generated, I was surprised to see it take me to an HP site. I
went to tinyurl.com to see what was going on. Nice. Learn someting new
everyday.

Hi Bruce,

Known issue for HP Printers and Scanners.

1. When the Found New Hardware Wizard starts at startup of the computer,
click <next>.

2. When it asks you for the HP disk, (the next thing that will require a
response from you probably), click <ok>. However, do NOT insert the disk
into your CD-ROM drive.

3. On the next screen that comes up, there will be a button that is already
highlighted telling the wizard where to find the printer driver (which is
what it is looking for). This button will be pointing it at "other media,
CD-ROM,etc.

The trick is to DESELECT this button. At that point, the button for your C:
drive will become active and you can select the C: drive. It will also
probably be prompting you with the location for the already installed HP
printer driver that is somewhere on your C: drive. (If not, you need to
click browse and locate the driver).

4. After you have deselected the CDROM and selected the C: drive, click
<ok> (or <next>) The Wizard then makes a second copy of your printer driver
(and, by the way, creates a second "installed printer" in your Control
Panel/Printers). And then, the wizard finally completes and tells you that
you have successfully installed the new hardware.

5. On subsequent startup, the Wizard should then NOT run.

YW. If you do want to install the new driver, take a look at the directions
provided by MS-MVP Cari (who often posts in the windowsxp.print_fax ng) for
completely removing traces of old printer driver software:
http://www.coribright.com/Windows/Article One.htm

All of the recomendations I've seen say DO NOT connect the printer until the
install routine asks for it.

tinyurl is nice for making sure that long url's don't break by wrapping in ng
posts or email. There are several of these services available. Different
services behave in slightly different ways, such as whether they include no. of
click statistics. The only ones with names I can remember are tinyurl and
shorl (short url). There is a comparison of some of them at
http://notlong.com/links/ but the list is by no means exhaustive.

Hi, Kelly,

Thanks. It worked, with a minor modification since I couldn't find where the HP driver
was installed locally (step 3) from the previous install. I had to point to the HP
CD...

From your note, I see that the fix is to let Windows' Wizard complete the install,
contrary to the HP instructions. I've described the modification I had to make to step
3, below.

Hi Bruce,

Known issue for HP Printers and Scanners.

1. When the Found New Hardware Wizard starts at startup of the
computer, click <next>.
Yes

2. When it asks you for the HP disk, (the next thing that will
require a response from you probably), click <ok>. However, do NOT
insert the disk into your CD-ROM drive.
Yes

3. On the next screen that comes up, there will be a button that is
already highlighted telling the wizard where to find the printer
driver (which is what it is looking for). This button will be pointing
it at "other media, CD-ROM,etc.

The OK button was highlighted, with the path pointing to D:\ (nothing else)
The trick is to DESELECT this button. At that point, the button for
your C: drive will become active and you can select the C: drive. It
will also probably be prompting you with the location for the already
installed HP printer driver that is somewhere on your C: drive. (If
not, you need to click browse and locate the driver).

Had to type in C:\, browsed C:\... for a while, but couldn't find the driver Windows
was asking for, hpbf312e.dll_, so I took HP CD to another machine and found this file's
location, then put HP CD back into first machine, and pointed to this file. It worked,
but then asked me for another file, hpdmon.dl_, which I couldn't locate locally, so I
had to take HP CD out of this machine and to another, and do a search on it for this
file. I found it, put the HP CD back into the first machine, pointed to this file, and
it worked again. This time, the Wizard came up and said it had completed the new
hardware install. I rebooted, and the Found New Hardware Wizard did not appear. I
have two printer icons in the control panel, one says HP PCL6, and the other HP PCL6e,
but I'll sort that out later. I had a similar "New Hardware Found" problem with an
Epson printer last month, but that was solved much easier.
4. After you have deselected the CDROM and selected the C: drive,
click <ok> (or <next>) The Wizard then makes a second copy of your
printer driver (and, by the way, creates a second "installed printer"
in your Control Panel/Printers). And then, the wizard finally
completes and tells you that you have successfully installed the new
hardware.
Yes

5. On subsequent startup, the Wizard should then NOT run.
The Wizard does NOT run any longer!!!

Kelly, you may be wondering why I had to take the HP CD to another machine to search
for the needed files. I have two XPPro machines sitting side by side. One is a Dell
OEM machine with a cd-r (the one with the install problem), the other is an older
machine with a cd rom, that was upgraded (clean install) to XPPro with a site license.

When I put the HP CD into the 1st machine, and say Look in D: for either of the two
files I need, I get returned:
c:\documents and settings\bruce\local settings\application data\microsoft\cd burning
This is even though I've said look in D:

If I put the HP CD into the other machine, that only has a cd rom, and say Look in D:
for these files, I get their location on the HP CD. That's how I was able to find them
and then point to them to complete the Wizard install.

I've got no idea why the search on the machine with the cd-r does this. It does this
on every machine in this office, and on my Dell OEM XPHome machine at home.

If you know, please tell me. I should probably make this a new question on this
newsgroup.

Thanks so much for the help. I've been to your site many times.

Hi Bruce,

Thanks for the thorough feedback and glad it helped.

As per your issue:

The default storage for CD Burning is here: Documents and
Settings\<username>\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\CD Burning

You need to modify it: If you are using TweakUI, go to My Computer/Special
Folders see what is set for CD Burning. Make sure it is set to a folder and
not a drive.
