With preview pane on the same as opening messages?"

I'm using Microsoft Outlook. With preview Pane option on is this the same as
opening a message. Can this option case me to receive a virus if there is
one attached to the message?

the preview pane will not open attachments, but it will run any bad html code
in the body of the message. The latest versions of outlook and windows try
to protect against it.

Unlikely. Outlook hasn't run code in HTML messages, either in preview or an
open message, in years.
