WISYWIG: New Document empty page displays strangely

In Word 2003, when I open a new document, the page that appears on my screen
is almost square; the aspect ratio is weird. When I pull up old documents,
the display is properly proportional. In the new document, successive pages
also have the odd aspect, and they display with a very thin line between them
on the screen, almost as if the program is in reading layout, but it's not.

Anyone have a clue what's causing this? Thanks in advance.
