wireless vs. wired LAN connections

John

How can I force XP to use the wired network connection when it is connected
instead of using the wireless LAN?

Right now it seems that if both are available, it just picks one and uses
it. I want to force it to use the wired LAN when I am connected to it and
use the wireless when I'm not. Can this be done?

Thanks,
John

Try:

Right click on My Network Places and select Properties. Click Advanced and
select Advanced Settings. Move the Local Area Connection for the wired
adapter to the top of the binding order list.

John,

Automatic Metrics in Windows XP should allow this:

Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

I don't think that will do it, Doug. The binding order doesn't affect
TCP/IP routing.

When there are multiple network connections in the same subnet, XP
uses the one with the lowest metric.

John, manually assign metrics to both connections, with a lower value
for the wired LAN and a higher value for the wireless LAN.

To assign a metric to a network connection:

1. Open the Network Connections folder.
2. Right click the desired connection.
3. Click Properties | Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
4. Click Properties | Advanced.
5. Un-check "Automatic metric".
6. Enter a number between 1 and 9999 for the "Interface metric".
