Wireless shutting off

This is a tough problem. I"m running windows VISTA and at times it just stops
picking up the wireless connections. I live in a neighborhood where there
are 5 other wireless signals that register on my wireless connections window.
All of a sudden, I can't pick up ANY of the signals. I"ve tried the "repair"
to no avail. I have to reboot, sometimes many times before VISTA picks up
the wireless signals. Any of you out there think you could help??? THANKS!!!!

So, periodically, the connections you are pirating shut you off. How
amazing!

Did you ever think that, just maybe, you should get you own "paid for"
internet connection instead of using others and degrading their bandwidth.

I'm not PIRATING ANYTHING. I pay for my own connection. I was just trying
to say that it's not MY connection that is shutting off, since I can see all
the others also. It's the VISTA that is NOT PICKING up ANY connection. The
problem is it's not recognizing ANY wireless connections. One minute it's
picking them all up, then, all of a sudden, they are all gone, MINE included,
and I have to reboot to get it to recognize any wireless connections. Sorry
for the misconception.

That is an entirely different situation. If you post "all" pertinent
information in the first post people really know what you are asking.

The fact that you can't see the internet connections of your neighbors is
ancillary to (and entirely disconnected from) the fact that you can't use
your own connection on your own computer.

The very first thing I would do is get rid of anything that has to do with
McAfee. It will cause this on Toshiba laptops, and who knows how many other
computers. Same for anything Norton/Symantec.

A little more info about your setup could be helpful.

What kind of wireless card are you using? Is it a USB?

What type of encryption are you using? Router?

In my attempt to be specific, I didn't want to waste peoples time thinking it
was my router, or signal. I understand what you're saying though! Next
time-more pertinent! thanks Rich

The only problem is that my wireless internet has worked perfectly with this
machine since the beginning of feb when I had purchased it. It's only in the
last 2 weeks that this problem has cropped up. Do you still think it could
be related to McAfee since I've had that on the machine since the get-go???
thanks!

Try uninstalling McAfee and installing Avast or AVG.. if it still cuts out,
McAfee is not the problem.. maybe :-)

I will state an interesting experience. A acquaintance got a new Toshiba
laptop. He asked me to set it up for him. I don't use wireless - he does, so
I set it up in his place of business (20 miles from where I live).

The internet connection, when it worked at all, was extremely slow - the
equivalent of dial up (he had a 6 meg connection). I told him I was going to
uninstall McAfee, because I had seen this problem before. He was dead set
against it. I walked!

The next day he had a service call from his ISP. The very first, and only,
thing the tech did was to uninstall McAfee. The internet connection was then
"at speed". Of course, the service tech did not install anything else to
take it's place.

NOW, this acquaintance calls me and asks me to install all the free
utilities I had mentioned the day before - needed to protect his system. I
told him I was prepared to do that yesterday but now he was on his own,
unless he paid a $85 trip charge and $65 per hour for service! <big grin>

I'm not too technical - it's on the motherboard? no usb, it's built in. I
got the computer at the start of Feb, so it's a fairly new HP. That's about
all I can tell you about the wireless part. sorry.

Rich - the funny thing is my internet works fine when it's working - fast,
great signal - the router is right next to the computer, and I didn't have
trouble before the last two weeks. That's what so vexxing about this. I
just dont know why the computer won't pick up the wireless signal all of a
sudden. Only rebooting (sometimes many times) will get the signal back. It's
like the wireless sensor is all of a sudden shut off.
I'll try getting rid of mcafee when I get home. It's worth a try since a
couple of you have mentioned that now.

McAfee updates itself in the background. It would not be the first time that
a security provider pushed out an update that killed someone's computer.
Look at what happened in China 2-3 weeks ago. Maybe millions of people had
their computers become unbootable.

I had similar problem - turned out someone had a wireless AP outthere that
was on my channel and for some reason it killed mine - changed the channel
and all back to normal

With wireless, it could be one of many things or a combination
of things that is causing dropped connections.

One of my computers downstairs is located near the kitchen,
and whenever I use the microwave oven it causes problems
with that connection. Some 2.4Ghz cordless phones can interfere
with wireless connections. Has anything in your house changed
in the last two weeks? Some users have reported that Bluetooth
can cause wireless connection issues.

It could be McAfee causing problems, but it really could be
quite a few different things.

Which wireless router are you using? Have you tried turning off the
router and restarting it? Resetting it? Some folks have had trouble
with WPA encryption.

This site below offers some suggestions on potential problems.

Thanks Michael -I'll try the site. The funny thing is that nothing has
changed in the house since it was working fine two weeks ago. I'm heading
home now to take off the McAfee and see if that doesnt do the trick.
thanks!

You're welcome. Be sure to post back after you uninstall McAfee
and let us know if that fixed it.

If it doesn't, check out this thread from the link I left you
earlier.

I followed your steps on another post for changing the power management to always being on for
the adapters and that has seemed to be the perfect remedy.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH! This was very annoying.

I'd like you to explain why u think McAffee is the source of wireless
connection issues. I run McAffee on 2 vista laptops without issues

only wireless issue i have is the frickin router needing to be rebooted
every day or two!!! They all seem to be overpriced, overheating JUNK!
I'm on my third Netgear router and its acting up, but at least it hasnt
died completely like the first two. sigh. AT least the price was
right--$39 on sale. I didnt have much better luck with other brands
either. and when they work, they are fast and send a strong signal.

Dave

I can heartily recommend spending a bit more to solve speed and reliabilty
problems.
I've had little trouble with any of the D-link gigabit routers (DGL4300 and
now DIR655 to gain better coverage and get "n" support). They also work
great for my wired machines, but the robustness of the wireless connections
over the popular routers makes them worth the extra.
