Neal, let us manually launch the Wireless Configuration Service in Service
Console to see what kind of error message will occur.
1. Click "Start", point to "Control Panel"
2. If you cannot see "Administrative Tools", click "Switch to Classic View"
on the left first
3. Double click "Administrative Tools"
4. Double click "Services"
5. In the right panel, search if there is any item related to Wireless, for
example, "Wireless Zero Configuration". Double click the item once you find
it. Please let me know the exact name if it is not "Wireless Zero
Configuration"
6. Please verify the "Startup type". If it is "Disabled", change it to
"Automatic"
7. Click "Apply" button to apply the changes
8. Click "Start" button to start the service manually
9. I wonder if you will get any error message. If so, please write down the
exact error message, this must be helpful for further troubleshooting.
In addition, may I know the exact brand and type of your wireless network
card? The information might be useful to find the compatibility with
Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
Currently, I would like to suggest performing clean boot of Windows XP.
Probably incompatible application or services prevent the Wireless
Configuration Service.
Let us perform clean boot to isolate the problem. To clean boot:
1. Click Start (menu), Point to Run (menu) and then type "MSCONFIG"
(without quotation marks) and then press OK to start the System
Configuration Utility.
Note: To create a clean environment for troubleshooting, you must be logged
on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to
complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network,
network policy settings might also prevent you from completing this
procedure.
2. On the Services (tab), check Hide All Microsoft Services (option) and
then uncheck all items in the list.
3. On the Startup (tab), uncheck all items in the list.
4. Click Ok (button) and then restart the machine.
5. After Windows starts, determine whether the symptoms are still present.
6. If the problem is solved, please go back to MSCONFIG to check some
checkbox and try again until we find the cause of your problem.
7. If the problem occurs with MSCONFIG in a Clean Boot Environment, then it
may be driver related, and we would need to start disabling non-critical
devices in Device Manager, like sound, external devices, modems, etc...

| Have this problem on windows 2000 and xp (xp i suspect was
