Wireless receiver does not work with PS/2

I use a wireless optical keyboard and mouse set. It has a USB and a PS/2
plug. It works fine with the USB plug. But with the PS/2 plug , the mouse is
not recognized (the keyboard works ok).

The MS wireless keyboard and mouse set consists of : a wireless optical
desktop receiver 3.0, a wireless comfort keyboard 1.0A and a wireless
optical mouse 2.0.

The computer is a Gateway GT 5032 with windows XP media center 2005.

Since I reached the USB bandwidth limitation (headset, webcam, remote
control and PDA synchronizer, even if they are not in use), the webcam does
not send pictures in messenger or skype. Therefore, I want to connect the
wireless keyboard and mouse with the PS/2 plug.

How can I get the wireless mouse to work with the PS/2 connection?

Thanks in advance, Gerhard

Do you have a self powered USB hub? That way you wouldn't have to give up
any of your USB devices.

Thanks for helping me.

I added a self powered USB hub (though this adds two more wires to the
computer and therefore negates the purpose of making keyboard and mouse
wireless), but it did not add any USB bandwidth (I double checked clicking on
device manager/USB controllers/Standard …USB host controller/
Properties/Advanced).

The computer has enough USB sockets, but unfortunately no more free PCI
slots for an additional USB card.

Is there a way to use the PS/2 plug and have both the wireless mouse and
wireless keyboard working?

Thanks in advance, Gerhard

The USB hub uses the "bandwidth" for the slot in the case but with its own
power supply adds more power for more devices. USB was designed to be daisy
chained so this (self powered hubs) is the way to go when you need to have
more USB devices attached than the base ports and power constraints.

There may be a way to do what you want but I don't know what it would be.
I've never had any luck using PS/2 with a wireless mouse. I suspect the
dongle/transmitter is designed to work with USB only.

I have had success with the following method for some devices that appear
to work when connected only to the computer: Install a USB device directly
to get the drivers installed and in place. Then move it to hub.

As I said, I've never tried that with a wireless mouse though. This is one
device that I want good "direct" contact with the system since it has other
functions such as wake from sleep and interacting with the welcome screen
early in the boot process.

Since Media Center is "gadget-centric" they may have run into some
