Wireless - No Network Browse - No Permissions?

D

David H.

Hello,

I have just changed over from a Per2Per(Ad-Hoc) set-up to Infrastructure.
I have a ADSL Modem/Router(192.168.1.1) and 3Com WAP(192.168.1.254)
I have 1*XP Pro, 3*XP Home, 1* Win98SE. (XP machines on SP1)
All devices have static IP's in the 192.168.1.xxx range
NO other Firewalls Installed, XP's own disabled

I can:
- Ping the Router and the WAP from each PC
- Access the Internet from each of the PC's
- Ping each of the PC's from each other PC

I cannot see/use the Network Places/Neighbourhood on any of the PC's
No devices are present, or it says I do not have permission.

BUT.. This is interesting.. I can do START | RUN \\name
and immediately get access to the shares\files on that PC

Any ideas greatly appreciated, It's now only an inconvenience.

Best Regards - David

David,

This sounds like a browser (I'm NOT referring to IE) problem.

Make sure the browser service is running on each computer. Control Panel -
Administrative Tools - Services. Verify that the Computer Browser service is
started.

The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers you have in your
domain / workgroup, at any time.
<http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=188305>

You can download Browstat from:
<http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip>
<http://rescomp.stanford.edu/staff/manual/rcc/tools/browstat.zip>

Browstat is very small (40K), needs no install, and runs from the command
prompt. Just drop it onto a couple workstations, and run it.

Provide browstat information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "browstat status >c:\browstat.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\browstat.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

Cheers,
Chuck

Hi Chuck,
Sorry for delay, away on business for 2 days, a longish reply, I tried to
simplify testing.

To simplify testing I moved the Win98SE PC next to the XP Pro PC, left other 2

Sorry for the prompt .. Any ideas?

David,

I got nothing from your previous post save a headache.

Let's start over.

Please provide ipconfig information for each computer on your network.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.
Identify operating system (by name and version) with each ipconfig listing.

You say you can "do START | RUN \\name and immediately get access to the
shares\files on that PC", can you actually open files in the shares? Can you do
that for each PC from each other PC?

You said "To simplify testing I ...left other 2 XP PC's out.", did you not run
browstat on any XP PCs except Slave1?

Cheers,
Chuck

David,

I'll bet that when you went from ad-hoc to infrastructure, you changed the
browser structure in your workgroup. My guess is that one of the PCs not online
was your master browser, or the browser for the Win98 computers.

When you brought your computers up in infrastructure mode, did you restart them,
and if so, in what order? They appear to be still using fixed ip addresses, and
I'd think that you'd want to use dynamic addresses, with a router to issue
configuration.

My guess is you need to synchronise browsers on the computers that are up. You
need to power down each computer simultaneously, then bring each up in the order
that you would like each to be the master browser. That is, the computer that
will be up the most you should bring up first, and make it the master browser.

The third article (long) should explain everything you need to know about the
browsing subsystem, the master browser, and where your problem lies.

Hi Chuck,

Thanks for all the help and the links.. I will read and digest :)

The other PC's are off while I move them around between family members.
I will try to switch on the XP Pro PC 1st, that is my PC and will be on 24*7(on
a UPS)
Then the other 2 XP Home PC's, then the Win98 PC.

BTW
I re-checked, XP PC is running Browser svc,
also I checked on the Win98SE PC's, They both have Browse Master "Enabled"
Is this O.K or will this complicate things?, you have option for Auto, Enabled
and Dis-Abled.

Many Thanks again..

David,

The Browser service will run on all PCs equally well - 98 thru XP. All PCs
online with Browser running will then participate in an online election to see
who should be the Master Browser. The PC that has been online the longest will
most likely be elected.

If you power on the XP Pro PC first, it should be elected. The others, powered
on subsequently, should then participate in the election.

Cross your fingers. Let us know what happens please.

Cheers,
Chuck

Hi Chuck,

Apologies for not getting back sooner, work and personal stuff.

Well almost there.. 4 PC, XP Pro, XP Home(2), and 1 Win98SE all
see each other in the network browse, share files & Internet. :) :)

BUT(Sorry) 1 Win98SE(originally the ICS Box) is proving a real pain.

I removed ICS, reconfigured the Wireless Device and IP settings.
It picks up an IP address, It can ping the WAP.. But will only very
occaisonally PING the router, 1 in 20, and not connect to Internet.
TTBOMK I have it configured just like the other devices.

I have removed all network components, and cards in Device Manager.
Let it re-discover cards, re-install drivers, added the network components.

It will work if I use the network card, But not wireless.
I even created 2 Hardware profiles:

1. Wired(disabled the wireless device in DM), work perfectly
2. Wireless(disabled NIC in DM) always get an IP from router, NO connectivity.

I'm a bit lost now.. I have checked for new Win98 drivers, I have the current.

Not sure if I should move this over to Win98 forum, but it would need all
of the history repeating possibly?

Many, Many Thanks - David

David,

I'm betting that you have a wireless issue here, rather than a Win 98 issue.
The wireless issue may be caused by having Win 98 - maybe the drivers for your
wireless network card are not Win 98 compatible. Or maybe there's another
issue.

I'd love to see two separate IPConfig listings for your problem PC - one when
booted under the wired profile, and working perfectly, the other when booted
under the wireless profile, and able to ping the WAP. Also what is the WAP ip
address?

Get connectivity working first. Then work on the Win 98 / Win XP sharing issue
- which is a lot of fun too.

David,

Definitely a wireless issue. Maybe time to start a thread in
microsoft.public.windows.networking.wireless.

You have connectivity - with extreme packet loss - but it's not a simple no
connectivity issue.

Why the increased packet loss between the WAP and the router? How is the WAP
connected to the router? How much distance between the two?

Get PingPlotter (free) from <http://www.pingplotter.com/>. Run a PP trace over
a few hours against the router (and the WAP between Krusty and the router). It
will graph ping times and packet loss for a configurable repeat interval (set to
5 seconds and run for a day). See if there are any variances.

Any diagnostics offered by the USB adapter?

What else do you have connected to the USB bus? Run System Information
(Programs - Accessories - System Tools). Open Components - USB. With the USB
List displayed, do File - Extract, save a text file, open the text file under
Notepad, copy and paste contents into your next post.

Do you have the current drivers for the USB adapter?

To get back to the original problem, though, connect Krusty by Ethernet cable to
the router, and test against one other computer.

Between Krusty and the other computer, test shares visibility (use actual name /
address of each computer as appropriate):
Start - Run then:
1) \\ThisComputerByName
2) \\ThisComputerByIPAddress
3) \\OtherComputerByName
4) \\OtherComputerByIPAddress
Report visibility of shares / exact error displayed in each test (8 tests
total).

Let's see what the wired connectivity status is too.

Hi Chuck,

Sorry for not getting back to you, I had to go away at short notice.

Current situation is.. It's all working Browsing Sharing, names.. etc...
(I have 2 niggling minor issues)

I actually had 2 problems with the Win98SE box.

Here's what I did..
1st tried another WiFi adapter on the PC.. No joy.
I found an article by one of the MVP's, dont have the link to hand.
It was regarding the network settings in the registry, I had 3 extra
ones associated to the USB device??
I followed the instructions, removed all network configs, removed devices
deleted all registry settings. re-booted and it rediscovered the LAN & WiFi.
I then re-configured.. NO joy... :(

So I decided to try one of the other WiFi adapters.. It worked..
The original still failed.. Tried that on another PC it failed..

So problem:
- Bad config in registry stopped the devices working.
- WiFi adapter would not work in Infrastructure, but it did work in Per2Per..
odd

Many Thanks for all your help and assistance with this, much appreciated.

David - UK

ps
I will start new threads for the niggly problems, I dont think they are related.
