Cannot peer-to-peer with XP over wireless

Ben Pursell

I am trying to configure 3 home systems to share files via
peer-to-peer with XP using a LinkSys cable/dsl WAP and
LinkSys wireless network cards in each system. I
completed the XP home/small office network wizard on each
system as required, but still cannot browse to the other
systems shared resources from any of the pc's--
permissions/access error encountered. I have tried
numerous ways to get to each PC-- browsing "My Network
Resources", manually mapping, and searching for the
computer by name. No success with any method of resource
connection.
I have checked the share permissions, and they are full
access for, unrestricted.
Besides the file sharing problem, the connections to
ourside internet resources are fine, but the peer-to-peer
just won't work between the wireless devices it seems.
For reference, I am setup on the WAP as "infrastructure"
because I do run cabled devices from the WAP periodically.
Does XP somehow BLOCK peer-to-peer file sharing over
wireless connections? If so, how can I overcome this and
get these little buggers to share? Thanks.

assuming you can you ping each other by ip and no firewall running. can you
ping them by name? if yes, what do you get if using net view
\\remotecomputername command?

Start with the simplest part. Are the XP workstations
installed as a member of a WORKGROUP? If so, what is the
spelling (include caps if used)? Are all computers
members of the same WORKGROUP (EXACT SpELLING)? Can you
see all of the computers via START / MY NETWORK PLACES /
ENTIRE NETWORK ? Can you get to the internet? Go to
START / MY NETWORK PLACES / VIEW CONNECTION. Are all
using the same protocols? View the TCP/IP numbering.
Are they all using the same format? IE 10.1.1.200-203
MASK 255.255.255.0

Hope this helps you.

Thom, I have verified all of the suggested items and have
arrived at the following results:
1) WORKGROUP-- name matches (with same syntax) on all of
the involved PC's
2) Can "see" the other systems via start\my network
places\entire network, but encounter a "permissions" error
while attempting to connect
3)Yes, can get to the internet on each PC
4) Yes, valid and logical IP scheme for all systems
involved.

QUESTION: The PC's had ZoneAlarm installed (BUT
DISABLED).. Perhaps may not be unloading iteself? I am
going to try to COMPLETELY REMOVE the ZoneAlarm software
from each and test again. ZoneAlarm (even disabled)Could
be the culprit?

RESOLUTION: I finally resolved this issue by COMPLETELY
REMOVING ZoneAlarm from the machines.. I tried to lower
the ZoneAlarm settings, to no avail, so I finally removed
the app. completely and peer-to-peer functionality was
activated. Thanks to all for the information and
feedback, I appreciate it.
