Are different brands of wireless networking components
compatible? For example, if I had a D-Link PCI adapter
and a Netgear Access Point, would it work; or do all the
components need to be the same brand, D-Link PCI adapter
and D-Link Access Point.

Generally speaking, mix-and-match works, though it's possible you may find
some little quirks or incompatibilities between some brands of hardware.

It usually works until you enable WEP. Then it usually
doesn't.

That's not my experience. I have a Microsoft MN-700 router, a D-Link
g-speed notebook PCMCIA card, a Motorola g-speed notebook PCMCIA card, a
Linksys b-speed USB card and a Belkin b-speed PCI card - all with WEP
enabled and all very happy.

Most folks with XP who have WEP problems are having problems because they
have both the card's configuration and the XP WZC service running - one or
the other, not both, and you should be all set.

I am. :-)
