Wireless networking

Hi

Please help a networking virgin

I want to get my laptop and xbox onto the internet using a wireless system.
I was thinking of having my main pc connected to a wireless router via a
cable. Downstairs the laptop would have a wireless pcmcia card and would
also be connected via a cable to the xbox via a second (non wireless)pcmcia
card. Presumably this would give me network access to each machine ??
Problem I have is that my current broadband modem is an internal pci type.
If I enable ICS will all the machines be able to access the internet?

Cheers

Sounds like you have the right idea. However, you could use a Bridge
on the XBox instead of connecting it into the laptop. That would free
up your laptop.

Although I haven't setup Wireless through ICS I've set it up
throughout the house for two PC's, one laptop and the XBox and PS2.

A router is no good to you if you're using an internal modem. Your ICS
server performs router functions already.

Your best bet is to dump the internal modem and replace it with an external
wireless modem/router(firewall) - get one that will also take a couple of
wired ports just in case. You then have the advantage of not using ICS and
it will probably be a lot easier to configure.

If you don't want to drop the pci modem, you can ...
Install a wireless nic into desktop. Install ICS server on this machine.
Make sure there's no network bridge between the wireless card and the modem
network connection.
Install both a wireless and wired nic into the laptop. Create a network
bridge between the two.
Set up both wireless network cards so they're running in adhoc mode - which
means they don't need a wireless access point.
Ive seen people on here have problems with adhoc mode so I'd prefer to use
the wireless modem/router. But, if your're planning on going wireless anyway
it won't cost you any more to try using adhoc first as you'll still need to
buy 2 wireless cards.
If you're buying wireless nics, buy the same brand as the modem/router you
may have to get in the future. In theory they should work with any wireless
network but in the real world they sometimes don't.
