Wireless Networking Problem...

Hello News Group,

Got two PC running XP Pro SP1 networked with NetGear MA111 wireless USB
plugs peer-to-peer networked. Got ICS working just fine and half a network.
That is to say one PC can view the shared contents of the other PC (which is
the PC that host ICS), and the PC that hosts ICS is now prompted for a user
name and pass word when it requests the shared folder from the other PC. No
PCs have password logins both are running ZoneAlarm Pro 4. This has only
started happening, what do I need to do to get both PC to view each others
shared folders without one of them requesting a user name and password? It
was not set up this way.

Many thanks for your consideration.

Regards,
Winux P.

Winux,

Check both computers, to see if Simple File Sharing (Control Panel - Folder
Options - View - Advanced settings) is enabled or disabled. With XP Pro on both
computers, you need to have the SFS settings the same.

If SFS is disabled, check the Local Security Policy (Control Panel -
Administrative Tools). Under Local Policies - Security Options, look at
"Network access: Sharing and security model", and ensure it's set to "Classic -
local users authenticate as themselves".

If you set the Local Security Policy to "Guest only", make sure that the Guest
account is enabled, and has an identical, non-blank, password on all computers.
If "Classic", setup and use a common account with identical, non-blank, password
on all computers.

With Zone Alarm, you need to configure them for file sharing, by identifying the
other computers as present in the Local (Trusted) zone. Firewall configurations
are a very common cause of (network) browser, and file sharing, problems.
