Ivan Wilson
I'm having some terrible problems with my home wireless network.
Here's what I got:
DLink DSL-604+ Wireless ADSL Router
PC running DLink AirPlus DWL 520+
Elite Group Systems Motherboard (K7S5A Pro)
AMD Athlon XP 1500+ CPU
Pocket PC - HP 4150 with built in 802.11b support
Laptop - Toshiba using a D-Link DWL-650+ PCMCIA card
My problem is that the PC keeps disconnecting from the wireless
network. I'm at a loss to figure out why. Some days it maintains a
decent connection. Other days it's up and down like a yo-yo.
Sometimes, when it disconnects, it cannot reconnect. It does not see
any wireless networks available. Or when trying to reconnect, it fails
to get an IP address. Other times, it says it's connected, but I cannot
access any web content.
I don't think it's my router because my laptop and Pocket PC can
maintain a steady connection while my desktop PC is losing connections.
I also have ruled out position. I've placed my router within 10 feet
of the desktop, and I still get the same problem.
Things I've tried so far:
· Re-install Windows XP operating system, service packs and patches
· Get D-Link to replace network card
· Get USB 2.0 network adapter (same problems)
· Upgrade Router and network card drivers to latest
· Remove all other PCI cards from PC (in case of interference)
· Disable USB hub (it looked like they were sharing IRQs)
· Installed Netstumbler to check signal strength (appeared fine to
me)
· Disabled "Turbo" setting on router (I was told that the 22 Mbps
setting could be the problem)
I've also noticed that my connection speed on my desktop appears
slow, particularly outbound traffic. My broadband access is 512 kbps
download and 128 kbps upload. However, my web cam is very slow to
update using MSN Messenger (approx refresh once every 30 seconds).
Using my laptop on the same network, I get near real-time refresh. I
see similar issues with uploading on FTP.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can try? Has anyone else
experienced these kind of problems?
