Wireless LAN Peer-Peer Xp and ME

Carolyn Tilley

We are trying to connect an XP Pro desktop to an ME laptop via a wireless
connection using 802.11. Both the PCI card and the PCMCIA cards are made by
Atmel

Can somebody please run me through the entire setup in words of one syllable
because we have tried everything and the software and manual are of no use
at all!
We appear to get connected ok but can't log on to the ME from the XP and
vice versa... and I'm sure it's something ridiculously simple but I just
can't figure it out!!

I can ping the ME with it's IP address but not by name and I can't ping the
XP at all! I have checked and double checked everything and it's still as
clear as mud!!

You need to provide more info. Are you connecting ad hoc or through a
wireless router? If a router, which one?

I've written a web site that should help you solve the problem:

Windows XP Network Troubleshooting
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/troubleshoot

Please pay particular attention to these sections:

1. Firewalls: Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection
Firewall on local area network connections -- it's for use only on a
direct modem connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all
other firewalls while troubleshooting.

2. Protocols: Use only one for File and Printer Sharing. If the
network needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing
from all but one of them.

3. NetBIOS over TCP/IP: Make sure that it's enabled on all computers.

Thanks for the suggestion Steve, I have read every word and in part it
helped fix the problem I had but now I have a new one!!

It's an ad-hoc setup I established and managed to get it all working by ip
but not by name (but I was connected and was perfectly happy with that!!)
and connected and all the drives were mapped and I got really excited, went
out for an hour and when I came back the entire thing had crashed and burned
and I'm back to the beginning and can't ping anything either by ip or
name!!!
Windows has started reporting a "serious error" but won't tell me what it is
in it's own annoying way!!

Did the network diagnostics on XP and basically anytime it gets to an IP
address, it failed!! Did nbtstat and everything looks fine there so did a
netsh to reset the ip and still nothing is working!!

By the time I've got this sorted I'll be an expert!!
