my laptop recently lost the ability to connect to the internet via
ethernet cable. wireless works fine.

at my house, for example, i have wireless. the laptop
detects the wireless network and connects just fine. but when i turn
off the wireless and try to connect via ethernet cable, the internet
doesn't work. there's an icon in the bottom right that will read
"local area connection 100mbs", and as far as i can tell the computer
detects the correct IP address, but the internet simply won't work.

the computer is assigned to do the automatic ip assignment and all.

there's also a "repair" button under the "local area connection" icon
in the control panel. i've used it, and it doesn't help. i've also turned
off the firewall and it still doesn't work.

can anyone help me? i wonder if the problem is related to sp2, because i
didn't have this problem before. although i'm not sure exactly when this
problem started because i've been using wireless only for about the last year
or so.

thanks. walter

i just found out that AOL Instant Messenger works just fine. what the hell
is going on? might it be a DNS issue? as far as i can tell the DNS is set
to configure automatically.
