Strange. Most of the time, the icon is the "monitor" type with green
"waves" emitting from it. But sometimes it appears as vertical "wand"
with green "waves" emitting from both sides.
Never use to do this. Why now? Should I be concerned?

Strange. Most of the time, the icon is the "monitor" type with green
"waves" emitting from it.

The Windows default WLAN tray icon is a blue monitor with white waves.
Third-party Software being installed with the WLAN adapter may display
that different tray icon. Usually, there is no need to run such software
when using the Windows settings for the wireless connection.
But sometimes it appears as vertical "wand" with green "waves" emitting
from both sides.

Consult the manual coming along with the Computer/WLAN adapter. That
particular third-party icon may (or may not) change depending on the
connection mode (AP infrastructure vs. Ad-Hoc peer-to-peer).
