After upgrading to vista, my hp dv2000t laptop can't copy large files
from/to shares on other computers (including xp and an hp mediavault nas).
When I connect the laptop to a wired connection, it works fine.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

What do you mean by "can't copy"? Does it refuse to start the copy
procedure? Does the transfer fail mid-way? Does the wireless connection go
down during the transfer? You need to tell us what the problem is before we
can give useful suggestions. Otherwise, we're just guessing.

Lots of rambling, crying and other irrelevant data. Now, what hardware
items do you have? What distances are we talking about? What did you
upgrade from and was it working before? And what other details do you notice
about your setup that might give us a clue about what's wrong?

Let's see. Looking at my parsing notes,
One floor and the distance you are talking about shouldn't be a problem
unless we are talking about steel studs, or other metal in the walls. The
construction of commercially built dormitory walls could take us in
different directions. Can you get your PC closer to the router the Wireless
Access Point (WAP) as a test?

Unfortunately The speed differences you stated seems to be about par for the
differences between XP and Vista. But you might be able to get some
improvements with SP1 when it comes out.

Bittorrent is known to be a problem but still used in many applications.

rambling, crying and irrelevant data? sure... explaining the ways that
i use my network to clarify that i can see evidence of slow transfers
(even when not watching my network activity) is obviously useless.

No useful info here.
what hardware do you want to know? the wireless chip is either an
atheros 5007eg or a 5006eg (linux and windows tell me two different
things)

Not useful

and the router (set to ap function with 128bit wep) is a linksys
wrt54g. there are one floor and 10-15ft between the router and my pc.

Ah...here's something. But need more detail.
this is my first experience using my own wireless, so, no upgrades were
done.

Just need to know...no upgrade.

i have two roommates that also use the wireless network, but
neither of them are active much of the time that i am trying large
transfers.

Just need to know...few users, lightly loaded.

when using xp, i noticed transfers were consistently swift;
transferring an encoded film over the network would typically take 6-8
min, instead of 10-20 (little to no other hd activity).

Good info.

the fact that
vista displays the transfer rate and i can see bittorrent protocol
nearly doubling it is what really irks me.

by this time, it has become pretty clear to me that there is some
user-crippling "feature" in vista that throttles data transfer over
wireless networks. because i am no networking expert, i cannot specify
exactly what i think is causing the problem; however, i know that it is
something vista is doing, otherwise, bittorrent would be just as slow
No useful info here except you are using bittorrent.
