Wireless & DCHP & 169.254.

Hi,

I've bought a Netgear DG834g Router / ADSL Modem and a few card for Laptops
etc. also a PCI Card for my WIN2K Computer.

The router works great as do the 2 wireless PCMCIA cards for the
laptops........... Only problem is with the PCI card for the WIN2K computer.
For some unkown reason this connects to the router (well it can see the SSID
and i've given it a WEP key) but won't pick up a valid IP address from the
DHCP server. It reverts to a standard 169.254.xxx.xxx IP address.

Is there anyway that I can overide this and give it a 192.xxx.xxx.xxx IP
Address ?

Thanks

You can certainly give it a static address. Go into Network Connections,
double-click the icon for the wireless card, click Properties and go under
TCP/IP and give it an IP (the subnet mask you are probably using would be
255.255.255.0)

However, this probably won't help you because the problem seems to be with
connectivity. Are you sure the WEP key matches the one used on the router?
A mismatched key will cause the symptoms you are describing...

Colin,

I've done everything the same as I did with the laptops which is the strange
thing which is why i'm hoping a static IP will solve the problem..... other
than that I can't think of what else to try.

The WEP key is Key3 (as the other 2 laptops are on there) and i've even
tried shutting off one of the other laptops and using that WEP key, still
not working !

A friend suggested that it might be interference but that seems a little
unlikely as I haven't moved the comp to it's new location and it's only
about 1 foot from the router at the moment ......

I'll give the static IP a go and see if that works.

Thanks

J
