Can I network a XP Pro and an XP home computer simply by connecting them
with a cable through the NICs?

Thanks - Will the Operating systems 'see' the connection and configure
themselves? If not where is some good reading on this simple network?

Is there a special type of cable I need?

Maybe. A special cable, called a crossover cable, will be required.
(explained in detail here: http://tinyurl.com/b2gk)

However, many manufacturers do not support the use of crossover cables with
NICs. Crossover cables exist to connect one hub/switch/router to another.
Linksys even goes so far as to void your warranty if they find out you used
one.

However, many people use them without problems.

I don't see anything about voiding a warranty on that Linksys page.
Where did you get that information?

I did an advanced Google search for pages on www.linksys.com that
include the words "void" and "warranty". It found 4 pages, and none
of them mention crossover cables.

Call Linksys tech support and tell them your NIC hasn't worked right since
you tried creating a network using their NICs and a crossover cable and that
you want to RMA your NIC because you believe it to be bad. Good luck getting
an RMA number.
