Winzip

Victoria

Does WindowsXP contain a winzip type of program. I can
unzip files sent to me how do I access a program that
zips file? do I need a 3rd party program or does winXP
contain one?

1. Open XP's "Help and Support Center.
2. In the Search box type: ZIP , and hit enter.
3. Click on the task titled: "Open a zipped compressed folder".

XP opens zipped files automatically, as you've found. In Windows
Explorer they look like a folder, but there's a zipper on the folder
icon.

To create one, right-click in the folder where you want it created
(just like you'd do to create a subfolder) and choose "New|Compressed
Folder". (I think that's the terminology, my machine has WinZip
installed, and that's changed the pop-up menu.) That will create an
empty "compressed folder" which is, in fact, a ZIP file. You can move
files into and out of it just like any other folder.

XP has a facility called zip folders, which should allow you to double
click a zip file and have it open in explorer just as if it were a
folder; you can then copy a file out from it. If that does not seem to
be working, give its installation a nudge; Start - Run and run the line
regsvr32 zipfldr.dll

Note that having this in action has the downside that searching for
files will go searching into every Zip or Cab file - slowing things
down. You can turn it off with the same line with an added /u switch in
the middle
