Yes, but the additional compression will be minimal since these are already
compressed video. I just checked with a 5MB .avi and the difference was only
8%.

I see that .avi is already compressed. How could Windows Media Player play
the compressed file? Perhaps not at all. It is uncompressed just prior to
playing and back into compressed format again while "idle". Do I read you
rite?

Thanks for the reply!

Yes.

Not exactly, I wasn't referring to any playback issues. My point is that you
can't expect WinZip to make the files significantly smaller because the basic
structure of, for instance, avi or mpg uses a compression algorithm. The same
is true of jpeg. So unless you have some valid reason to use WinZip other than
wanting the file size to be smaller you shouldn't bother, since you'll only
save 8-10% of space. Let me know if you need further explanation.

John, I understand you the first time that it cannot be made significantly
smaller because it is already compressed.

My question is:
When I play Windows Media Player, does it still play back the video in
compressed format? Perhaps present technology can make this possible. I
always gather that it has to be uncompressed for the player to run. Am I
still miss somewhere?

I'm not sure I understand your question, but I'll try. WMP won't play a ZIP
file. you must at least open it and double-click the video file to play it, or
alternatively extract it. A video file is decoded by WMP according to the
default video codecs installed with it or downloaded for a specific file type.
Here's a link to a discussion of DivX, one of many Codecs available. It may
help you better understand the theory involved.

Yes - but they are already highly compressed, and show little further
compaction on zipping - indeed they may even get larger
