WinXp "x's" problem after re-install

Had to replace my hard drive for my ECS KT600v1.0 mob with Sempron processor
and reloaded WinXp-Pro. Now I have numbers 5 or 6 to indicate up/down arrows
showing the order of files, etc. in windows explorer. Along with this the
boxes for my selection on web pages do not show the x's, but show it as
partially blackened. This also happened when I clean installed on my
Satellite laptop. Anyone know a solution?

Did you install all the proper hardware drivers from the given hardware
manufacturer's web pages after you installed Windows XP cleanly?

Did you use the same Windows Xp Mendia in both installations? If so -
where'd you get that media?

Yes in the laptop case I made sure of that. On my ECS desktop I didn't after
seeing the same thing happening as with the laptop. Unfortunately I burned
up the ECS so I stopped working on it and moved on to the laptop. Used same
WinXp-pro disk that was slipstreamed with sp2 by me using the original disk
as the source plus sp2 from the web.
