WinXP to another computer

L

Lawton

I purchased WinXP Home (preinstalled) on a Dell 4500
computer directly from Dell. It has been a nightmare
since day one. I have spent far more time fixing glitches
than doing useful work. I finally gave up and went back
to Win2K Pro (which works awesome). Dell will not do
anything, especially now, since the one year warranty is
over. I am really chafed that I purchased this software
with the machine, had to purchase a separate copy of
Win2000, and now I have to put this XP Home on the shelf
and never use it. Is there anything I can do. Can I
legally put this copy on a different computer and get it
activated. Microsoft will only send me directly to my
manufacturer and not answer any questions without paying
them.
Thanks in advance,
Lawton

OEM copies of Windows (those purchased preinstalled on a machine) can not be
transfered to other computers.

It's an OEM copy? The EULA says that OEM copies are forever tied to the
original machine they are installed on so the answer (to comply with the
licence) is no.

The WinXP as supplied by DELL is likely to be an OEM copy. ie licensed to a
specific pc - not transferable

Dell's OEM CD can't be installed on another computer with editing and
reburning the CD, but that isn't all that hard to do.

Now if you're trying to install it on another Dell, that would probably
work without having to do editing.

Sorry, no. It's an OEM copy and the license for OEM copies ties
it permanently to the first computer it's installed on.

Microsoft doesn't provide free support for OEM copies.

These are two of the three big disadvantages of OEM copies (the
third is that a regular OEM copy also can not be used to do an
upgrade). OEM copies are cheaper than retail ones, and these are
the reasons why.

Greetings --

OEM licenses are _permanently_ bound to the first PC on which they
are installed. An OEM license, once installed, is not legally
transferable to another computer under _any_ circumstances.

Buz [MSFT]

Hello Lawton,

My name is Buz and I am with Microsoft. I am sorry you had so many problems
with your Dell and Windows XP Home.

It seems that you have already removed Xp Home and installed Windows 2000
Pro on this computer. If so I hope that is working fine for you. If not
please try the cleanboot process listed at the end of this post to attempt
and narrow down whatever problems you appear to be having with Xp Home.

For you question, it appears that the XP Home product you purchased from
Dell came with your computer and was not a separate product. If this is the
case I apologize as their is nothing I can do for you. We sell to third
party manufactures and they are responsible for distribution and support of
the product. They also have the right to modify Windows to specifically suit
the needs of your specific computer. It is highly unusual to have a whole
lot of problems with a brand new computer unless their is a hardware issue
of some sort. You see when these computers are built they all have exactly
the same version of Windows on them and again this version has been modified
by the manufacturer to specifically run well on your computer.

Perhaps after you received your computer you may have installed some
software that was incompatible with Windows or maybe the install didn't go
right somehow?

Unfortunately I do not know what issues you were having so I am unable to
provide detailed assistance.

Can I legally put this copy on a different computer and get it activated.
The short answer is no.

The long answer is no as well but I will refrain from going into great
detail. Basically the copy of XP Home that you paid for was discounted
because it came with that machine.

If their are technical issues I can assist with please post and will advise.

I will be looking for your post.

Here is the XP Cleanboot process:

We want to implement the Cleanboot process using MSCONFIG to rule out 3rd
party software as the cause of this issue. MSCONFIG from XP can also be used
on a Windows 2000 Pro or Server client.

Go to Start\Run type in Msconfig and press OK.
Go to the Startup tab.
Click on "Disable All"
Go to the Services Tab
Click on "Hide all Microsoft Services"
Uncheck the 3rd party services that are left
Press OK twice to reboot.

Once your computer is restarted see if the issue still occurs. if it still
does go to Msconfig and select Enable All on the startup tab.
If the issue does not occur go to the Startup tab and select items 4 at a
time or so with reboots in between to narrow down the exact item causing
your problem.
