My WinXP machine starts to suddenly shutdown itself down for no reason,
is this an indication of virus? Any way to fix it?

Why don't you run an updated anti-virus in order to find out.

Hi

Have a look in the Event Viewer for any 'Errors'. If any are found, could
you please post the Event ID and Source? With those your problem could be
narrowed down.

Stop kicking the plug out of the wall.

Not the problem? Then provide some DETAILS.

I was thinking about the temperature issue, but I checked the power
supply unit cooling fan, and I installed a front fan, all seems working,
but I did not check the CPU fan. (I should open the box and check it
next time)

But as soon as it shutdown, I immediately restart the PC, then it can
stay for hours, does this rule out the temperature issue? (I should
check the cpu temperature from BIOS next time)

Thank you for the advice.

Sudden shutdowns of Windows XP can be attributed to
over-heating of the CPU, chipset or RAM as possible
causes. Also to be considered is the quality of the
power supply and the amount of power it is supplying.
There is really not enough information here, ranging
from the hardware composition of the computer to what
it was doing when the shutdown occurs.

Yes, you are absolutely right, I have to pay more attention to
scrutinize all the possibilities, may be it is time to do a PE (physical
examination) for my PC, if it needs a format & reload, I have to bite
the bullet, thank you so much.

Excellent. Be sure to send the consultants here the
complete H&P (History & Physical), ROS (Review of
Systems), examination results, etc. Also, include a
Past History, Family History (i.e., progency of the
computer) and Social History (viz., where it has been,
gone and done, etc.) This should provide a good foundation
for an Impression and possible Treatment Plan. <:-}}

Spontaneous shutdowns are indicative of a hardware problem, reformatting
and re-installing the OS will not fix a hardware problem, you'll just be
re-installing on the same hardware problem.
