I ran software that I think changed a registry entry. My xp sp2 firewall is
no longer 'ON' by default. I would like to fix this, but can't find any info
searching MS support, google etc. Any help appreciated

Start | Run | Type: firewall.cpl | Click OK |
On the General tab, click:
On (recommended). This is the setting that you should normally use.

You can also select the Don't allow exceptions check box. When this check
box is selected, the firewall blocks all unsolicited requests to connect to
your computer, including requests to programs or services selected on the
Exceptions tab. Use this setting when you need maximum protection for your
computer, such as when you connect to a public network in a hotel or
airport, or when a dangerous virus or worm is spreading over the Internet.

The Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service needs to be
set to Automatic and it needs to be running.

Open Services...
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing
(ICS) |
Set the startup type to Automatic | Click Apply |
Click the Start button | When the service starts, click OK |
Close Services

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\
SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\StandardProfile
Value Name: EnableFirewall
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 0 is OFF and 1 is ON

You cannot start the Windows Firewall service in Windows XP SP2

Yes, I understand this.. no problem with turning 'on' or 'off' there

I understand this feature as well and have one 'exception' specified.

I have checked this service and it is and already was set to automatic and
running at startup. said:

Yes, I looked at the above entry. Turning my firewall on or off changes the
value data for that entry. However, if I restart the computer with the
firewall set to ON, when I reboot the computer it is set to OFF again.
NOTE: I notice that when I open Windows Security Center, it shows 'ON' under
firewall (at least one firewall installed is on...etc.) This could be
detecting zonealarm, so I will disable zonealarm on startup and see if it
warns me that firewall is OFF.. If I click 'Windows Firewall' under 'manage
security settings for', It again shows Firewall as 'OFF' (not recommended)

I read the article above and did the steps in the first example there to
'reset' the firewall. It did what was expected, but still, the firewall is
'OFF' by default whenever I start the computer.
Thank You Wes, I appreciate your help. Although the problem is not resolved
as yet.

Are you running Norton Internet software? If so, that is known to affect
Security Centre, System Restores etc. Uninstall the Norton and see if that
sorts out the issue.

hi Maincat,
NoNoNorton.. but after I disabled zonealarm from running on startup the
Windows Firewall is now 'ON' by default.. Apparently the Windows Firewall was
detecting ZA and offing itself.. I didn't realize it did that. Thanks to you
and to WES too..

Run only ONE firewall! Running two CAN cause problems.

It is up to you on which one you want to run.

If you have ZoneAlarm enabled, it may very well be disabling the Windows
Firewall.

If you cannot disable ZoneAlarm and you want to run the Windows Firewall,
uninstall ZoneAlarm.

I am not telling you which one to run. I run ZoneAlarm on one machine the
Windows Firewall on my other machine. ;-)

Q. Should I use both the built-in firewall and a software firewall from a
different company on my Windows XP computer?
A. No. Running multiple software firewalls is unnecessary for typical home
computers, home networking, and small-business networking scenarios. Using
two firewalls on the same connection could cause issues with connectivity to
the Internet or other unexpected behavior.

One firewall, whether it is the Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall or a
different software firewall, can provide substantial protection for your
computer.

I had the same problem, it was caused by a Microsoft update.
Microsoft has solved the problem now with a new update, just update
manualy.
Or remove the last updates.
This problem also causes that the command Map Network Drive or Net Use
no longer works.
Good luck, let me know if it helpes.

ZoneAlarm is supposedly better than the built-in Windows firewall. I used to
use ZA on my win98 system with no problems. I have Norton Internet Security
on this machine & it does disable the Windows Security Center Service. If you
set Security Center to Manual startup however, NIS won't disable it, but you
do have to start the service manually before you can use Windows Security
Center. Hope you find this info useful.
