WinXP refuses to release the generic MS TWAIN drivers

Howdy Folks

For over a year my trusty Microtek E6 {SCSI) has been performing great on my
WinXP Pro, P4-3.06, all SCSI puter. I'm using ScanWiz 2.60, which is the
last driver Microtek made for the model.

A few days ago Windows somehow switched the drivers from the Microtek Twain
to windows generic Twain (which is very dumbed down). I believe it happened
when I had some problem's with Corel PhotoPaint 11.

I couldn't roll back the drivers to the correct ones. I've tried
uninstalling the scanner & software & everything I could think of to try
force the scanner to use the Microtek drivers.....all to no avail. Windows
installs the drivers OK, but doesn't let the scanner be run by them.

I'd appreciate any suggestions u might have...TIA

Remove all of the Microtek software especially include any values in the
registry.

Disconnect the printer from the computer

Reboot the computer.

Install the Microtek software.

Connect the printer.

It should now use the Microtek software instead of the Windows software.

If this doesn't solve your problem, I have no more suggestions.

thanks for the suggestions Jim....that was one of the first things I tried,
but w/o manually checking the Reg entries. I'll do it soon.

BTW...I'm assuming u meant scanner, not "printer".

2nd BTW...I played with disabling the WIA Service in winXP & also deleting
the scsitwain driver w/o success.

Maybe take a look at this. I've done this before when I had a driver that
refused to install. Despite that it claimed to be installing, whenever I
checked the actual file size and version, it would always end up being the
other driver, which did not match the size and version of the driver I was
installing.

Start - Settings - Control Panel - System - Hardware - Driver Signing

I had it set to Warn, which SHOULD have let me install the other driver,
and claimed to be installing the other driver, but as I said, whenever I
check the actual file size and date, it would end up being the old file.

So I set it to Ignore. With this setting, the driver I wanted was finally
installed. I also set this action to be the system default. Now this is
actually under Server 2003, but functionaly it's the same as XP in this
respect.

In my case, I was installing TWAIN drivers for a Mustek 1200 CU. I also
had to change the OS registry key to read Windows XP instead of Server 2003
or it refused to install.

Good luck.

Thanks Mr. Grinch for the tip...although I didn't need it this time, it's
worth remembering.

I did fix the problem...what the hell final did it, I'm not sure...I kept
un/re-installing, etc till I final got PhotoPaint to be able to choose the
Microtek Twain driver instead of only being able to pick the generic one.

Maybe the problem lay with PP all along as the only driver that shows in
Device Mgr. are the MS ones.

Thanks again
Peter
