WinXP Pro install hangs at blank blue screen at 1st reboot

Hi - I've been trying to install WinXP Pro but keep running into the same problem no matter how I try to install it (i.e. clean install, upgrade from Win2K Pro). The initial setup goes fine, but at the first reboot, after the Welcome to Windows XP screen, I get a blank blue screen with just the mouse pointer visible (but it won't move). The computer has no activity whatsoever at this screen - no hard drive activity at all. I've left it over night and came in to the same screen. As I said, I've tried a clean install on a reformatted hard drive, and I've tried reinstalling Win2K first and doing an upgrade. I've also tried it after unplugging all of the peripheral devices. Is there any way to find out what is causing the problem? I know my hardware is compatible and the CD works on other machines. Thanks.

From what you write, I assume you ran the compatibility utility, right?

This could well be a bad/incompatible video driver. Try booting into Safe
Mode (hold F8 while booting into Windows) and change the video driver to
"VGA". Reboot normally and if it comes up (butt ugly graphics in this mode),
you will know the problem and go get the latest video drivers from your mfr
(or replace video card if all else fails).

Are you running and Nvida AGP graphics card? I had the
exact problem till I removed it and used an old PCI
2meg "Number Nine" I had from eons ago. Windows XP then
installed perfectly. After it was running, I then
switched cards and it found and ran fine with Nvidia card
ever since. I had this happen on to seperate machines
running different Nvida cards.

good Luck.

That's exactly what happened. I removed the Nvidia card
and used the integrated graphics and it installed great.
I'll try reinstalling the AGP card later. Thanks for the
help.
