WinXP Pro does not see any SLAVE drives

This is so very odd. I'm trying to add a second Hard
Drive (Maxtor 80GB) to an HP Pavilion PC and even though
the new drive is recognized by BIOS, it doesn't appear in
Explorer or Disk Management when connected as a SLAVE.

The drive IS properly partitioned (NTFS), formatted and
(here's the odd part), it WILL appear in WinXP if I move
it to the MASTER connector on either the Primary or
Secondary IDE cable.

It seems that WinXP is simply not able to detect anything
connected as a SLAVE, even though BIOS shows it. To rule
out a HD issue, I even moved the CD/DVD drive to SLAVE
and it also vanishes (but it's there in BIOS).

What's up??

Have you checked the jumper setting to make sure that the two units are not
set to both be MASTERs. Also, you may need to set the first unit as MASTER
with this new hard drive set as SLAVE, via the jumpers on the two units.
Cable Select setting may not work, in your PC.

Yes, I've tried both ways - using CS (which is marked on
the IDE cables), and also using the SLAVE jumper. No go.

And, as I noted, the drive IS always recognized by BIOS
either way. It just seems as if WinXP isn't aware of any
SLAVE devices that are in fact detected by BIOS. Is there
some WinXP setting or flag that blocks SLAVE devices?

I'm stumped. (And I've added second drives to lots of PCs
over the years...)

Forgive me if I have jumped in late to this thread but I was wondering if
you have gone to Administrative Tools / Computer Management and then to
Storage / Disk Management. Does the drive show up there? I have a slave
drive on my computer and it works fine

Greetings --

Have you double-checked the jumpers on the Master drive? Some
hard drives have separate jumper settings for "Master/Single" and
"Master/Slave Present."
