I use Windows XP Pro, a number of harddrives, the ASUS PAP800 Motherboard
with built-in Sound Max soundboard.

It went out after I installed a backup program (which works fine) and
re-installing the ASUS SoundMax software , deleting it and re-installing it
does not bring the sound back.

The device manager does not see a sounddevice.

Injecting the speakers and taking them out of the sound output slot does not
change anything either.

Any other ideas?

Boot into Safe Mode, open Device Manager, and delete sound cards you find
here. (Safe mode will show all devices.) Reboot and let Windows re-detect.

Delete what...The icon, get a grip.To revive youre sound card or controller,
expand the tree,R.click on the device,select uninstall,close out,restart
comp.
or if a card is installed, power off, move card to diffrent pci slot.

I tried all that. SAFE Mode showed NOTHING re sound.

RESTORE finally got sound back.

Remember, It was SOUNDMAX which is part of the MB of ASUS>

RESTORE finally after days of trying got the sound back. Why, I have no
idea. I see no difference anywhere except sound is finally back.

Restore is a pretty decent program in Windows XP.
