winXP NIC troubles

I have a RS32040 compaq laptop (athlon64 3200+, 512mb etc.) with a
realtek NIC that's in the motherboard.

I have winXP home running, and the NIC is detected just fine, and
whenever I plug a cable in it (tried numerous cables), it detects it
just fine, gets an IP from the DHCP server, however it cannot transmit
any data after that.

I see packets getting sent and received but I can't even ping anything,
including my router.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled drivers, installed SP2. I am going
to try to format and install winXP Pro, but I'm wondering if there's
anything else I should try before I format?

Has anyone else seen anything like this? I'm thinking it could almost
be a hardware issue.

thanks,
p

Type this command in the Start | Run box:

netsh winsock reset catalog

Explicitly set the proper speed and duplex modes (e.g. 100 Mb, full
duplex) in the network card's properties.

Un-install (don't just disable) all firewall programs while
troubleshooting. Then, go to Start | Run | Msconfig | Startup and
disable any firewall remnants, such as ZoneAlarm's TrueVector service.

If those ideas don't solve the problem, it could be a hardware issue.
If it is, formatting and re-installing XP Pro won't help, but
connecting a PC card NIC to the computer would.
