WinXP machine can't browse the network

I

input/output

We have a simple workgroup with 8 machines on it.
They are all configured identically to use TCP/IP
and NetBIOS over TCP/IP. They all have the same
workgroup name.

One of the machines can't browse the network. It is
no different that any of the others.

When I use browstat to try and get some info using
the machine that can't connect I get a message:

<Command Prompt Output>

Status for domain WORKGROUP on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{7E1D378E-BE18-4E87-88DB-
BE8EBDFECF57}
Browsing is NOT active on domain.
Master name cannot be determined from GetAdapterStatus.

</Command Prompt Output>

From any other machine I get a normal listing of which machine
is the master browser, etc...

This is making me nuts.. Anybody have any idea's why this is?
Thanks in advance.

Jay,

Is the problem computer visible to the others in Network Neighborhood?

Is the problem computer running XP SP2, or pre-SP2? This is most likely a
firewall, or services, problem.

In particular, check to make sure the WF/ICS service (SP2) / ICF/ICS service
(pre-SP2) is running.

Yes, but when any machine tries to navigate to it they get the typical
useless dialog:

" <machinename> is not accessible. You might not have permission to use
this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out
if
you have access permissions. The network path was not found."

... which is really funny because I AM the network admin.. then what?! /jk

All XP machines are running SP2.

Yes WF/ICS is set to Automatic (started) on all machines.

They are all configured to have the same (correct) services running. Just
for
completeness, I followed your links are read the listing of services and
re-verified that they are all set to run

All the machines have a common user account between them that provides
access to shared files/directories.

Now you are beginning to see my frustration! Thanks for giving any help
at all, but I think this problem may stem from something deeper. I'm hoping
someone can tell me how to uninstall/reinstall plain TCP/IP... or something
similar.

Jay,

OK, first check the LSP / Winsock, and reset TCP/IP if necessary.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/problems-with-lsp-winsock-layer-in.html>

If no help yet, let's diagnose the problem. Provide diagnostic information for
two working computers, and the problem computer.

OK, first check the LSP / Winsock, and reset TCP/IP if necessary.

So, because I am running SP2 I opened a command prompt and went with
the "netsh winsock reset catalog".

After a reboot, I was still unable to browse the network even though
I can access the internet.

So, I went ahead and fully rest the TCP/IP using Microsoft's
instructions: " netsh int ip reset C:\IPRESET.log "

After a second reboot I had to reconfigure my IP address, DNS info
and uncheck LMHost and set the radio button to Enable NetBIOS
over TCP/IP. Still no luck (internet is fine, browse network no way).

Here is the details of three computers. 2 are XP machines (including
the one that does not work, mine (first) ) and the last machine is a
Win2k Pro machine that has no trouble browsing either...

Interestingly, all of their NODE types are different. Can that be the
source of the problem?

That was too easy...

Opened regedit, navigated to:
\HKLM\SYSTEM \CurrentControlSet \Services \NetBT \Parameters

and found the key:
DhcpNodeType = 0x00002 (or something similar)

Deleted this key, rebooted, and now my computer can browse the
network normally. FYI - my node type changed to "Unknown" in the
ipconfig /all

But...

How come I couldn't find your pages with extensive Google searching...
and I tried to scan with Google Groups as best I could to find a solution
but I didn't find anything helpful...

Anyway I hope this thread prevents anybody else from going through
the frustration as I did. Thanks a million Chuck.

Jay,

Can you please define "I couldn't find your pages with extensive Google
searching"? Were you looking for my pages in a general Google search? I'm
still trying to get my website indexed, and I can use the help identifying when
it doesn't work.

Anyway, thanks for the update.

I'm

No, I wasn't looking for your page, but the following search terms
in Google didn't yield links to your site within the first 4 or 5 pages
(and I didn't see anything about editing that registry path on any
of them either).

search string: Windows XP can't Browse Network TCP/IP
alt search string: Windows XP browse network Netbios not working

and various conjugations...
