How much RAM memory do you have? Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring Task
Manager and select the Performance Tab. What is the Total, the Commit Charge
and the Peak?

How large is your hard drive? Is it partitioned? How much free space on
each drive / partition. How is the drive formatted -FAT32 or NTFS. To
get this information whilst in Windows Explorer place the cursor on each
drive in turn, right click and select Properties.

To investigate how you are using hard disk space you need to make sure that
you can see all files. Go to Start, Control Panel, Folder Options, View,
Advanced Settings and verify that the box before "Show hidden files and
folders" is checked and "Hide protected operating system files " is
unchecked. You may need to scroll down to see the second item. You should
also make certain that the box before "Hide extensions for known file types"
is not checked. Next in Windows Explorer make sure View, Details is selected
and then select View, Choose Details and check before Name, Type, Total
Size, and Free Space.

Next right click your My Computer icon on the Desktop and select System
Restore . Which drives are shown as Monitored and which as Turned Off?
You only need to monitor the drive containing your Windows
operating system.
http://bertk.mvps.org/html/adjustdihealthy.html

To increase you free space on your C select Start, All Programs,
Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp, More Options, System Restore and
remove all but the latest System Restore points? Restore points can be quite
large. By the way System Restore Points are hidden files which you will not
see even after you have taken the measures to show hidden files detailed
above.

You should use Disk CleanUp regularly to Empty your Recycle Bin and
Remove Temporary Internet Files. Whenever you remove redundant files you
should always run Disk Defragmenter by selecting Start, All Programs,
Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter.

It is likely that an allocation of 12% has been made to System Restore on
your C partition which is over generous. I would reduce it to 700 mb. Right
click your My Computer icon on the Desktop and select System Restore. Place
the cursor on your C drive select Settings but this time find the slider and
drag it to the left until it reads 700 mb and exit. When you get to the
Settings
screen click on Apply and OK and exit.

Do you have files / folders that might be moved to the other partitions?

To move programmes use Add / Remove Programs in Start, Control Panel, Add /
Remove Programs to uninstall programmes. Create a Programs Directory on
your other partition and reinstall there.

Some other notes you may find useful.

Create a My Documents folder in another partition and copy ( not move ) the
contents of My Documents to your new folder. Then delete the files in your
My Documents folder ( if you encounter problems deleting use Shift + Delete
to bypass the Recycle Bin ). You will also need to change Default File
locations in the Microsoft Office programmes you use. For Word go to Tools,
Options, File Locations, highlight Documents, click on Modify and change
file path. For Excel go to Tools, Options, General and change default file
path.

For Temporary Internet Files select Start, Control Panel, Internet Options,
Temporary Internet Files. Settings, Move Folder.

To move the Outlook Express Store Folder select in Outlook Express Tools,
Options, Maintenance, Store Folder, Change.

i have a 40g hard drive with 20g used and 20g free. if i run winxp for
hours, my free 20g turns to barely anything like 50mb or lower if i keep
running winxp. what is using all my hd space? system restore only takes max
200mb, i set it to that. i also look at my hd, checked properties and hidden
files too and it only says around 20g is being used, so where did my other
free 20gs go? why does my hd slowly go from 20g free to almost zero when
running winxp?

Please correct me if I am misunderstanding what you are saying. You are
saying that after booting you have 20 gb free space and that after running
for a number of hours you only have a minimal amount of free space e.g.
50 mb. Then if you Shutdown and reboot you again have 20 gb free space
but running for hours the free space is once again minimal. Is my
understanding correct?

My immediate reaction is to wonder how large pagefile.sys is after booting
and how large immediately before you are forced to shutdown.

If you have not already done so go to Start, Control Panel, Folder Options,
View, Advanced Settings and verify that the box before "Show hidden files
and folders" is checked and "Hide protected operating system files " is
unchecked. You may need to scroll down to see the second item. You should
also make certain that the box before "Hide extensions for known file
types"
is not checked. Next in Windows Explorer make sure View, Details is
selected
and then select View, Choose Details and check before Name, Type, Total
Size, and Free Space.

You find pagefile.sys at C:\pagefile.sys if you have not relocated it from
it's
default location.

Please advise whether my suggestion is correct and we can start looking
for a programme with a memory leak.

gerry that is my exact problem. my pagefile.sys says it's around 700mb
and it doesn't change size. i unhide everything on my c: drive and
check it's usage and it's around only 20g so 20g should be free. after
running winxp a while the free space drops but i check c: drive again
and only 20g is still being used and pagefile.sys hasn't changed too.
where di my other free 20g go? when i reboot all my space is back. i
notice this even if i don't run any programs and just leave winxp
running. should i try to boot in safe mode and see if this still
occurs. how can i find what is taking the free space. thanks.

Are you using any Norton Utilities?

I suggested FileSize earlier. Did you download and install?

FileSize -a useful tool for use with Windows Explorer when investigating how

The download link is not obvious. Click the here in the two sentences of the
web page accessed through the link above. "I can't count the number of times
someone has asked for this. So here is a module you can install that shows a
Folder Size column in Explorer."

Using Filesize and in Windows Explorer you should be able to identify
an extra 20 gb of files of files on a 40 gb disk, unless the files are
hidden.

I only know of System Restore and Norton Protected Storage remaining
hidden if you have changed all the settings in the way set out in one of
my first message. Did you make all the changes suggested?

If you changed the System Restore disk allocation as suggested you could
only gain 700 mb. I await your answer regarding my first question about
Norton Utilities before we can check out whether Norton Protected
Storage is a problem.

You may check on pagefile (virtual memory) usage with Page File Monitor for
XP:
http://www.dougknox.com/

If you get anything much more than 20 / 30 mb virtual memory usage you
need to add RAM memory. The system uses virtual memory for a
limited number of tasks rather than RAM memory.

Make sure you study the readme.txt file carefully to ensure you get the
utility to work as it should.

Have you installed any "memory boosters" ?

Same isse here! Problem is I just noticed it 2 days ago when I started
getting warnings about low disk space. I ran across a KB article on
Microsoft that said go to your C drive, select all and right click on a
folder and view properties. When I did this the drive only shows to be using
17.2gb. The drive itself is a 60gb drive. After installing the Moveax app
suggested below by vemoex this little test shows to be pretty accurate.

When I look in my event log I do see that the system restore service has
been having some issues for about 3 weeks that I was not aware of. When I
click on properties on My Computer and click on the System Restore tab it
keeps crashing. I tried to reinstall it but it keeps failing. My next step
is to reinstall WinXP sp2 to see if that fixes any corrupt files.

I continuously perform disk cleanups. This usually frees up about 2-3gb but
then slowly bu surely it goes back down to less then 200mb. I start the
whole process over, recover about 2-3gb and then it goes back down again.
This is really odd. At one time 30+ gb of free space! I'm running Spybot,
Counterspy and fiddled with HijackThis. There doesn't appear to be any
spyware, malware or viruses on the system. There is nothing unusual going on
in the task manager. All systems appear normal accept I keep losing
gigabytes of space.

Any other ideas?

Please look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Warning and Error Reports over the last 2 days use and post copies here.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body
of the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error
Report into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting
from Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Gerry for the directions. The information helped find where all my
space is being allocated to! I found that the restore points in the System
Volume Inofrmation folder was at 37gb. So there is definately something
going on there.

I'm having one additional problem though...When I click right click
properties on the My Computer icon and them click the System Restore tab, I
keep getting an error telling me that my attempt to run a DLL as an
application has failed. The properties window then closes (forced) and it
sends crash information to Microsoft.

How do I fix this? I can clearly see that my space is being gobbled up by
the System Restore, but I can't seem to get into System Restore to fix it.
The SR service is currently not running and when I attempt to start it I get
an error it tells me "Could not start the System Restore Service on Local
Computer. Error 15: The system cannot find the drive specified." This is
weird because I have not changed any drives recently. What do you do in this
situation?

What Warning and Error Reports are appearing in Event Viewer? Copy
the Reports for the last 2 days -see my last post.

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp,
More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System
Restore point? That will give you working space.

OK, I'm happy but stumped. I found some additional System Restore "fixes" by
doing another search in the Discussion Group. I fiddled with attempting to
reinstall SR. I went through the process and got numerous errors choosing to
continue through each of them. I poked at a few other settings and finally
rebooted...something along the way told me I have to reboot so I did.

When the PC came back up it took for ever for the apps in the background to
start. I thought "what the heck?" I was curious so I went to My Computer to
size what the disk space situation was...low and be hold it was at 5gb, I
refreshed a few seconds later and it was at 8gb, then 12gb, then 24gb and
finally resting at 38gb free space.

What ever I did whether it was the re-install, poking around at the settings
of a few things, something purged the SR back to 12/7 (when my problem
apparently started) and ran a new one (hence the slow PC at startup). I
don't know what did it, but I'll give you guys all the credit. This ended
being cheaper and faster then working through MS directly!!

Thanks a million,
Chris

Yep Chris.

A link to Bert's site was in my post of 29 December.

I am pleased the cause of your problem is sorted.
