Hi,

I'm having problem using the yahoo msg voice chat on my XP
sp1 machine. Every time I click on the 'talk' button and
error 'Trouble communicating with the voice server.
Attempting to reconnect.' comes up.
I'm also using the Yahoo msg on my w2k laptop which is on
the very same network (i.e cable broadband and a linksys
wireless cable router) but this time the Yahoo Msg works
fine.
Any idea of what the problem could be on the XP side?

Thanks,
G.

Georges,

XP Internet Connection firewall is causing the problem.

Ramesh,

Thanks for your reply.
The firewall isn't turned on. I'm using norton internet
security instead. I tried to completely turn off the
norton firewall but it didn't do anything. Any thought?!
Cheers,
G.

Dear George,

Thank you for your post.

My name is Laura and it is my pleasure to work with you on this post. I
understand that when you tried to use the Yahoo Messenger voice chat, you
received the error message saying that 'Trouble communicating with the
voice server. Attempting to reconnect.' However, this problem does not
exist for another Windows 2000 computer on the same network.

From the description, it seems that the network connection to the Yahoo!
Voice servers is broken. The data is not flowing smoothly between your
Windows XP computer and the Yahoo! Voice server. Before we go any further,
please answer the following questions so that we can have a better idea as
to the exact problem:

- Are there any problems in accessing other web pages from the Windows XP
computer?

Based on my experience, this problem may be related to firewall. Please
perform the following steps to disable the Windows XP build-in firewall:

1. Click Start->Control Panel->Network Connections.
2. Right click on the icon, and click Properties.
3. In the Advanced tab, clear the option 'Protect my computer and network
by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet'.

If you installed any third party firewall or anti virus program such as
Norton, McAfee or ZoneAlarm, please temporarily uninstall it to test this
issue. Meanwhile, please check whether you have hardware firewall enabled.
If so, please disable it.

If anything is unclear, please feel free to let me know. I am glad to be of
assistance.

Have a nice day!

Best regards,

Dear George,

Thank you for your update. I understand that you have turned off the Norton
firewall; however, this problem continues. If the router has firewall
enabled (hardware or software), please check the firewall settings.

In addition, you can use the System Configuration utility to disable all
additional services and startup items to test this issue in a Clean Boot
environment. To do so, please perform the following steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks) in
the Open box, and then click OK.
2. In the Startup tab, click the "Disable All" button.
3. In the Services tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" checkbox,
and then click the "Disable All" button.
4. Click OK and restart your computer to test this issue again.

From the symptom, Windows XP cannot create a smooth connection to the Yahoo
voice server. If this issue continues, let us use the ping command to see
the connection status. To do so, please perform the following steps:

Step 1: Identify the Yahoo server
--------------------------------
1. On the Windows 2000 computer, click the "Talk" button to create the
connection to the Yahoo server.
2. Click Start, and click Run.
3. Type command in the text box, and click OK to open Command Windows.
4. Type netstat in the Command Window, and then press Enter. All the
established connection will be displayed.

Please check whether you can identify the Yahoo server name and IP address.

Step 2: Test connection
------------------------
On the Windows XP computer, we can use the ping command to check the
connections status.

1. Open Command Window.
2. Type the following command and press Enter:

Ping -r 10 <Yahoo server name or IP address>

This command will list the route information when your Windows XP computer
connects to the Yahoo server. You can post the results of the netstat and
ping command so that we can analyze it.

If you encounter any problems, please feel free to post back.

Have a nice day!

Laura,
I have no problem accessing any web pages on my XP box.
I have Norton Internet Secutity that acts as my personal
firewall and anti-virus (Windows fw is not activated). I
have deactivate Norton and also to bypass my cable route
but it didn't fix the problem either. The Laptop running
w2k also runs Norton IS that is configured exactely the
same way as my XP box. I uninstall MSN, tried deactivate
QoS but have been unlucky so far. Since I keep my winXP up-
to-date on a regular basis using the windowsupdate web
site, I was wondering if there was a security patch that
could cause the issue....
I've tried yahoo with only one other party so I cannot be
sure that the problem is not on his side. But yet again,
the Laptop running w2k worked fine.
I hope this helps.

Regards,
Georges

Dear George,

I understand that you have disabled Norton firewall and bypassed the cable
router; however, this issue continues.

According to the Yahoo web page, this problem may occur when the network
connection to the Yahoo! voice servers has been broken. There may be a
problem with your connection to your ISP, or the problem may be further
along the path to Yahoo!. For more information, please refer to the
following link:

http://help.yahoo.com/help/sg/mesg/use/mvoice/mvoice-16.html

This problem seems to be unusual. To isolate this issue, please go to the
following Yahoo web page and click the "Clicking here" link to test whether
you can connect to the Yahoo Chat server on the Windows XP machine:

http://help.yahoo.com/help/sg/mesg/use/mvoice/mvoice-20.html

In addition, I still suggest that you perform the steps in my previous
post. According to Yahoo web page, the current list of Yahoo! Voice Chat
servers is the following. Please check which server your Windows 2000
computer uses and then test to ping the Chat server on the Windows XP
computer.

v1.vc.scd.yahoo.com (66.218.70.32)
v2.vc.scd.yahoo.com (66.218.70.33)
v3.vc.scd.yahoo.com (66.218.70.34)
v4.vc.scd.yahoo.com (66.218.70.35)
v5.vc.scd.yahoo.com (66.218.70.36)
v6.vc.scd.yahoo.com (66.218.70.37)
v7.vc.scd.yahoo.com (66.218.70.38)
v8.vc.scd.yahoo.com (66.218.70.39)
v9.vc.scd.yahoo.com (66.218.70.40)
v10.vc.scd.yahoo.com (66.218.70.41)
v11.vc.scd.yahoo.com (66.218.70.42)
v13.vc.sc5.yahoo.com (66.218.70.43)
vc1.vip.scd.yahoo.com (66.218.70.44)

If anything is unclear, please feel free to post it.
