I have a one Linux box that I have to configure as a backup machine. I can
ssh (using putty) from WinXP to linux, but cannot get any communications to
go from Linux to WinXP. All firewalls are down so they are not the problem.
If I try to ping the WinXP box from linux, it just hangs and does not return
any result. However I can ping the Linux box from WinXP without a problem.
Both are wireless going through a Linksys Wireless B router. What on the
Windows side could be blocking the communication???

Did you set up Samba?

Samba is setup and working. Communication to the linux box are not a problem,
it is communications going back to WinXP that are non-existent.

Then I'd guess that although you say you've turned off all firewalls,
you may have a firewall active on XP that you've overlooked. Norton AV
2005/06 for instance has "Internet Worm Protection" that is really a
firewall. Having that active plus the Service Pack 2 Windows Firewall
could cause the problem.

Can you ping the XP box from any other machine (assuming you have one)?
The non-response to pings sounds like a firewall is blocking the
request.

Malke thank you for that info on norton, i turned it off completly for a
quick test of going from linux rh9 to win xp home ver and it worked.

I was pulling my head off to find info as to why it was not working.

Now to find a perm solution but leaving norton on. If you know now of one,
could you please post.

Again thanks,
Mike

I don't use Norton products (because I hate them and think they suck),
so I can't tell you how to configure NAV exactly. If you're able to
turn off the "Internet Worm Protection" feature entirely, then do so
and just use the Windows Firewall that comes with Service Pack 2. If
you allow File & Printer Sharing in the WF, you won't have any trouble
with your lan. I use the WF on all the Windows boxen and have two SuSE
9.3 machines on the network, so I know this works.
