WinXP and a flash card reader/writer recognition

I have a USB SD flash card reader/writer.
WinXP recognizes the USB device, but not the SD flash card.
There is a saved picture on the flash card, and the flash card works
ok in a digital camera.
I did not format the flash card since it works ok in the camera.
Should I format it? And if so, which format? Other ideas?

Camera's usually have a format function ... might be a good idea to format
it with the camera, that way you're least likely to screw up plus it will
build the necessary folder or initial file structure.
Format will erase that picture but you may be able to first tether the cam
to the computer and transfer it via usb/firewire direct.
