WinXP and 250MB Zip drive.

Can anyone please tell me if Win XP with SP1 is supposed to read a
250MB Zip drive without any extra software driver ?

The reason I'm asking is this :
I live in a remote region where a friend has been using a Roland VS-840
music processing machine. It uses a 100MB Zip drive that died some time
ago. I couldn't find a 100MB drive for him, so I bought a 250MB unit.
The Roland machine can't boot from the new 250MB drive (but works with
a 100MB drive from another machine).

When I connect the 250MB drive to my computer (Win XP with SP1a), it
detects the drive but hangs whenever I try to read a Zip disk. It has
no problem reading from a 100MB drive.

So it seems to me that there are two possibilities - 1) the new 250MB
drive is defective, or 2) it's not compatible with the Roland machine
AND needs extra software to work in Win XP. Can you help me decide
which one it is ?

The new 250MB drive came with a CD, but the CD and the booklet are
tightly sealed in plastic wrapping. I want to avoid opening the
wrapping unless necessary in case I have to return the drive.

I'd return the drive. The 250's should work
the same as a 100 did. It certainly appears that the 250
is no good.

You can always download the drivers from Iomega's web site. No need to open
the CD.
