winword.exe

can anyone please help? I am now regularly getting the
following problem. My pc slows down, almost grinding to a
halt. when I check processes in task manager, I find
that "winword.exe" is using up pretty much 100% of CPU.
Even after 20 minutes, it is still using all of the CPU.
I have to reboot. But when I try to do this, I get
message saying winword.exe not responding, and asking do
I want to end task/ lose any unsaved data? I end task and
pc reboots. anyone know why this keeps happening, as it
only started happening about two weeks ago, was fine
before. And it doesn't happen every time, only sometimes
at random it seems. I am using windows XP, athlon 1800,
IE6, broadband, 256MB Ram. Thanks for any help. RP.

The problem you are asking about is Word related, you may get better
responses in the Word newsgroup.
Anyway, have you tried to rename your normal.dot file? Sometimes
corruption of this file will cause weird problems with Word.
Another suggestion is to re-install Word (Office).

What does a scan with a current antivirus program (meaning a version not
earlier than 2002 and using updated virus definitions) show?
