HELP!!!!! I installed SP2 and when I restarted, I have a Stop message due to
"winsrv" not found.

I went through the help and it says to run "recovery" mode. However, I do
not seem to have the right administrator password. I tried a blank one and I
have tried every password I have ever used. Help!!!!!!!!!

Is there any way to backup my files and then just re-install windows?

Hi Chris,

You may be the victim of sysprep.

Cannot Log On to Recovery Console After Running Sysprep [Q308402]
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308402

To workaround this, use the 6 floppy boot set:

Home edition:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=33290

Professional edition:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=33291

Once into the Recovery Console, copy winsrv.dll from:
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 to: C:\Windows\system32, then exit and
restart the system.

In addition to Rick's concise info, this may be the issue :

" You receive a "Stop: c0000135" and "winsrv was not found" error
message after you install Windows XP Service Pack 2 "

Hey Mow!

Nice catch with that article. I knew about it, but didn't tie it to the
problem with winsrv.dll.

The sp2 update turned out to be a disaster and I'm so sorry I went for it.
I'm getting the winsrv error along with the administrator password problem
in the Recovery Console from my Toshiba Satellite. The link you provided is
not taking me to the Professional edition download.

Any suggestions?

(BTW, I can't believe Microsoft released this update. It's a high risk
nightmare.)

The problem I am dealing with is the winsrv error during an attempt to
upgrade to sp2 coupled with this sysprep problem.

There are sp1 and sp2 download disks available. Since I was in the process
of upgrading to sp2, it is not clear which ones to use.

Any ideas?
