WINS and VLAN

Nader Zamani

Dear all.

we have a network that has two cisco catalyst 6506
multilayer switch as core layer switch and ip address of
class B (172.31.x.0/24) and I divided our network into
multiple vlans and assgined seperate subnet for each vlan.
I create seperate scope in DHCP server (W2k Adv. server)
for each vlan(and subnet) and I think that all setting are
ok.Now my problem is only the computers that are belong to
same vlan can see each other in netwok neigborhood.
Tanks for your help.

Do you have a Wins server? Are all clients pointing to the Wins server? If
you have more than one Wins server are they replicating? Is this a single
domain or are there multiple domains?

Nader,
Communication between VLANs has to pass through a Layer3 device like a
router and by default all broadcasts are blocked by the router. One the
reasons for creating VLANS is to increase number of broadcasts domains. As
marc suggested you can use WINS server.
Were you able to communicate between different VLANS using IP address or
FQDN?

Thanks
Pavan
